Werner with two artistic goals, but personal mistakes have cost Chelsea dearly – VG

(Chelsea 3-3 Southampton) Goalkeeper Timo Werner (24) has woken up. At home against Southampton, he opened the Premier League goal tally and showed why Chelsea paid just over 460 million kronor for him. However, the shaky defensive play cost the home team dearly.

The German left RB Leipzig as the club’s highest-scoring player of all time this summer, but he didn’t exactly fly off the starting grid in the English capital.

But against Southampton he relaxed, in a beautiful way.

Two pearls

After 14 minutes, he was denied his first Premier League goal after being deflected offside, but only a minute later he scored his goal. A tough pass from another summer signing, Ben Chilwell, had so much speed in him that Werner could just jump on the ball and catch it on the other side.

Southampton’s stopper Jan Bednarek advanced five and Werner rushed towards the goal.

He stopped, passed a couple of other Southampton players and put the ball in control in the goal. The relief of finally opening the goal tally at Chelsea Blue was clear, but the German was far from over.

About a quarter of an hour later, he started in the usual way in the back room, and Jorginho found the new spearhead. He took it to the goal lobbet Lionel Messi’s flair on Alex McCarthy, he took it back and headed the ball into goal.

Chelsea was in full control for a long time, but was severely punished for personal mistakes.

Kai Havertz fumbled inside his own half, and Frank Lampard’s men were severely punished. Che Adams played top scorer Danny Ings, who elegantly rounded Kepa Arrizabalaga and got the ball into goal.

Chelsea continued to make mistakes after the break and was punished again. Kurt Zouma seemed to have good control in a career duel with Che Adams, but was careless with the support pass to his own goalkeeper. Adams chased, Kepa missed the ball, and after some time inside the box, Adams hit the ball into the net.

Chelsea have already conceded five goals due to personal mistakes this season. That’s the best in the Premier League.

But soon after, Havertz made up for the mistake of the first setback. Werner was involved again when he was played free on the right. Instead of finishing off and going for the hat trick, he crossed paths with compatriot Havertz, who easily put the ball into goal.

Thus, he also opened the goal account in the Premier League.

In other words, Werner was very influential for Chelsea this Saturday, but could not do much for the defensive shake that characterizes Lampard’s team.

Smell

In overtime, at one point Chelsea seemed to be in good control, Southampton landed a free kick. Former Chelsea striker Ryan Bertrand was cleared, but not past Theo Walcott in the return room. On his second Premier League debut with “The Saints”, 14 years after the first, he called. The shot wasn’t particularly good, but it turned into a goal pass when Jannik Vestergaard spread the ball with his head and put the equalizer.

3-3 scores aren’t too common, but this is Chelsea’s second 3-3 game this season. They could have overtaken Liverpool in the table with a win here, but the collapse means they are in sixth place, five points behind the league leader Everton. And since a lot of teams still have the benefit of playing this weekend, they can quickly finish lower on the table.

For Southampton, a draw at Stamford Bridge was more than a win, and at the time of writing they are in 10th place, one point behind Chelsea.
