Klæbo on the future of cross-country skiing: – I think it’s healthy with a change

– Cross country skiing has been the same for many years and I think it is healthy with a change. Then everyone should take a position and see what can be a solution, Johannes Høstflot Klæbo tells TV 2.

Although the season is over, there is now much discussion about the future of cross-country skiing.

Cross-country ski legend Bjørn Dæhlie argued to VG that the classic style should be removed from the World Cup program. He assumed that fewer and fewer nations would claim the top spot, and that it would be easier for smaller cross country nations if there was only one style.

– I think it’s like swearing in church. I don’t think you should cut back on the classical style, Odd-Bjørn Hjelmeseth told TV 2 about Dæhlie’s proposal.

Norway’s ski queen Therese Johaug also doesn’t agree with cutting back on style.

– I feel like the classic should still be there. Create a moment of excitement, some are better at classic and some are better at skating. So more people have a chance to show their best, Johaug tells TV 2, adding:

– I’m at the end of my career, so it doesn’t matter much to me. But for sports, it is important to maintain both.

THE FUTURE: Johannes Høstflot Klæbo believes that steps must be taken to increase interest in cross-country skiing.

Høstflot Klæbo believes that various solutions may be relevant, but that it is important to see the big picture.

– If interest is going to increase, something may have to happen. It must be discussed whether it is a question of eliminating classic cross-country skiing or something else. I think everyone has some ideas about it, says the Trøndelag resident, adding:

– If people agree that what we must do is eliminate the classic style, then we must do it now. But I think there are other things that need to be done before removing it. There are many things that can be done before then.

The 24-year-old thought he was positive with discussions about the development of the sport.

– It is difficult to say what the final solution will be, but for everyone to take a position and think about what is most interesting for the future, it is definitely a discussion in which I want to participate.
