There are no signs of a decline in infection in Oslo, notes deputy health director Espen Rostrup Nakstad.

At 1:00 p.m., the Oslo City Council announced a press conference on the status of the infection.

– Oslo is at a crossroads of the pandemic. If the people of Oslo now take a pattern and follow the infection control advice, Norway can become a yellow country again in a few weeks, Nakstad tells VG.

– If the number of infections does not decrease, we run the risk of ending up in the same situation as in much of Europe, where we are now entering a new wave of serious infections, underlines the deputy director of health.

Oslo is the municipality with the most cases of infection in Norway. The limit that the government has established for a country or area abroad to be colored red is that less than 20 infected per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days. With recent figures from the municipality of Oslo today, Oslo is now at 93.5.

After there was a lot of controversy over whether Oslo should introduce new measures, it tightened a week ago.

– Do you think that the Oslo city council has introduced enough measures now, or is this an incentive for them to toughen up more?

– The City Council has introduced a package of measures that make sense. We are concerned that people should follow them, so that together we can control the infection situation in Oslo. Unfortunately, we see that at the moment there is a stable high level of infection in most parts of the city and in many different environments in Oslo, responds Nakstad.

The case continues after the video …

– With the good efforts of most of the people in the coming weeks, you will have the opportunity to get the infection well controlled throughout the Oslo region. Then everyone can live a more normal life without intrusive infection control measures, and infection detection work in Oslo and neighboring municipalities will be less pressured, Nakstad says.

– Do you mean that it is the people of Oslo who must act now, not the city council?

– Yes, because now people in Oslo have received very clear advice from the city council, which is based on the national councils. And we have seen that other large cities in Norway have managed to reduce the infection, especially Bergen. Now the people of Oslo have a chance to help take control, he says.

People in their 20s have been infected all fall. However, it has been feared that the infection will spread to older population groups, who are at higher risk of severe illness and death. It has happened in several countries and cities in Europe.

And it may be about to happen in Oslo, Nakstad notes.

– The infection no longer occurs only among younger adults, but has begun to spread to other age groups. This significantly increases vulnerability and contributes to Oslo continuing to be a driver of the pandemic in Norway, Nakstad says.

Here you can see how the infected in their 20s now dominate the statistics in recent weeks:

– Why is it so critical for the rest of Norway that the infection in Oslo is decreasing?

– We see that Oslo, as a large and important living and working region, contributes to the spread of the infection in neighboring municipalities and many people also travel to the country from Oslo. In almost every country in the world, capital cities have been a center for the spread of infection throughout the pandemic, Nakstad says.

– There are 80 new infected in the last 24 hours in Oslo. It is the highest since the beginning of April. Is amazing?

– No. The figures in Oslo vary from day to day and are more correct if you put them on the sampling date. So the picture looks pretty smooth – it’s still at a high level and there aren’t very big variations from day to day, Nakstad says.

– The infection remains stably high and there are no signs of decline so far, he emphasizes.
