On Saturday morning, the residents of Sunndalsøra in Møre og Romsdal almost woke up to summer temperatures.
Five days before Christmas, there is little reminiscence of the wintry atmosphere in the western Norwegian town.
Fjord Township Mayor Eva Hove tells Dagbladet that she woke up to very mild and pleasant weather on Saturday, with a place between 12 and 13 degrees.
– Further into the fjord, in Tafjord, it is even hotter with up to 17 degrees, he tells Dagbladet.
At the same time, the YR summary showed 14 degrees on the Canary Island of Tenerife.
Smash the dream of white Christmas
– exceptional
According to the rapporteur, it is not entirely uncommon for Tafjord to have heat records in November, December and January.
– It has happened many times before. But that it is hotter in Tafjord than in Tenerife is a bit special. It feels a bit unreal.
With five days to go until Christmas Eve, there is little indication that there will be a White Christmas in Tafjord this year.
– In western Norway, the weather can change quickly. It can go many degrees higher and below freezing temperatures and snow in a fairly short time. But just this year, I think Tafjord should look a lot after a White Christmas.
However, a white Christmas is not uncommon in the area, explains the mayor.
– Often the snow doesn’t come until February, but this is a bit exceptional in relation to temperature, he admits.
When asked if he thinks the temperature can be attributed to global warming, he at least thinks this is part of the explanation.
– Heat records are often set in Tafjord in both summer and winter. But the records are getting higher and higher, so there is reason to believe that global warming must be partly to blame, Hove tells Dagbladet.
New heat record: – Beautiful
Various heat records
Anne Solveig Håvelsrud Andersen, a meteorologist on duty at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, confirms that 17 degrees were observed today at the Tafjord Gauging Station on Møre og Romsdal.
However, there is no heat record in the town for December.
– Clearly it is reasonably hot for December, but there is no record for heat this season. In 1972 and 2015, it measured 17.7 degrees, he tells Dagbladet.
The temperature in Tafjord on Saturday is fourth above the maximum temperature in December.
– It has been a mild day and several newer stations in western Norway have had a temperature record in December.
These include Mjølfjell in Voss, Sogndal Airport, Førde, Sandane Airport and Stryn.
The reason for this is that it is a smooth air that flows towards us, combined with a favorable wind direction with winds from the south and southeast, says Andersen.
But high temperatures are unlikely to persist.
– Right now it’s hot and good, but the temperature won’t stay that high. It’s heading for a lower temperature in the next few days, and it’s not impossible for there to be snow around Christmas Eve.
When asked whether it is climate change that is causing the current summer weather in western Norway, the duty officer explains that they do not link individual events to the weather.
– But the trend shows that we are moving towards a warmer climate, Andersen tells Dagbladet.
