Liverpool hero Jamie Carragher believes that you have to be careful when judging the Everton goalkeeper.
England goalkeeper Jordan Picford has created ire among Liverpool fans after he injured midfielder Virgil van Dijk in his violent intervention in this weekend’s Merseyside derby.
The message also came on Sunday that van Dijk must undergo surgery for his knee injury and now there are fears that the Dutchman will miss much of the season.
Pickford has had to endure much criticism for the entry to the midfielder. Former Liverpool player Graeme Souness is among the critics.
“That was not an inning, it was an assault,” Souness told Sky Sports.
Souness also reacts strongly to the fact that the VAR did not intervene and expelled Pickford.
– It should not be possible with the time they dedicate and the technology they have, believes the expert.
Carragher: – Things like that happen.
Jamie Carragher, an expert colleague and Liverpool hero, supports Souness that Pickford should have been sent off.
“Of course it should have been a red card,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
However, the former Liverpool stopper arrives with a somewhat surprising defense from the Everton goalkeeper.
– There will be a lot of frustration on the Liverpool field, amongst Liverpool supporters and perhaps neutrals who believe Pickford should be sanctioned and who believe this was a terrible tackle.
– You have to be careful with that and I will defend Pickford when it comes to this. I broke my leg, I almost broke Nani’s leg. Unfortunately, these things happen in soccer, says Carragher.
The former midfielder says he is convinced Pickford did not intentionally injure Van Dijk.
– He did a terribly bad intervention, but I think he should end this now, says Carragher who hopes to avoid a lightning mood.
Van Dijk with update
However, it is questionable whether Liverpool fans recover so easily from injury. On Sunday, several major English newspapers reported that van Dijk could risk missing out on the rest of the season.
In that case, it will be a big recession for Liverpool, who will therefore not be able to use one of their clearly more important players.
Liverpool have not given a date for when they expect Van Dijk to return to the football field.
The Dutchman himself made a statement on social media Sunday evening. There he made it clear that he would try to come back even stronger.
– I will do my best to come back as soon as possible, writes van Dijk among others.
Liverpool had to settle for a point against city rivals Everton on Saturday. The reigning league champions are currently in third place in the Premier League.
The Merseyside dressed in red will face Sheffield United in the next league game.
