Viktor Hovland: – – You have no heart for this

On Sunday night, Viktor Hovland made it to the top of the PGA tournament in Mexico. With the victory, he also recorded just over 11 million in prize money and sent him to third place on the overall PGA Tour list.

Knowing that a birdie on the last hole would ensure victory, the Oslo man handled the pressure and took his second PGA victory.

At home in Norway, the Eurosport commentary duo, Per Haugsrud and Henrik Bjørnstad, stumbled with excitement. When Hovland threw a putt and secured victory, they erupted in cheers and burst into tears.

– Yes! There is. He’s our boy! It’s so cold there. Have you seen? Not true that boy, the duo shouted in unison as tears flowed.

See and hear the reaction of the Norwegian commentators in the video above.

In retrospect, the Norwegian comment has received a lot of attention on social media.

– real feelings

When Dagbladet calls Eurosport commentator Per Haugsrud the next day, the former pro golfer hasn’t gotten much sleep.

– It must stop, I don’t have the heart to go on like this, says Haugsrud with humor in his voice.

The commentator is excited and hasn’t quite landed after yesterday’s Norwegian golf achievement. When asked about his own comment, he starts laughing.

– These are real feelings. We can’t say we’ve been there like him, but we know what it’s all about and showing emotion comes naturally. We know what that means. It becomes natural. It is not possible to evoke any emotion. We’re completely in the zone and forgetting about everything else, Haugsrud tells Dagbladet.

With yesterday’s victory, Hovland re-entered golf history. He is now the fifth European with at least two PGA Tour victories before his 24th birthday. The other four are big names: Seve Ballesteros, Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia and Jon Rahm.

– There are so many records and rankings with which it impresses now. Hovland has become a megastar in a year. It is number 15 in the world. For those of us who dominate the world of skiing, it may not sound so good, but being number 15 after such a short time in such an important sport is crude, Haugsrud believes.

– Teacher favorite

Hovland finished 20 strokes below par in the Mexican tournament. The title is the largest to date for a Norwegian golfer.

– It’s a bit unreal for me, I’ve been practicing this sport for so long, to see how he does it and how easily and how easily he does it. It is so smooth all the way. It seems so calm. We know he was nervous, but he doesn’t show it. He takes it easy and then has confidence in himself, Haugsrud evaluates.

The victory came in the last PGA tournament of the season. In 2020, Hovland has risen from 93rd to 15th in the rankings. Therefore, you are assured of a place on the PGA Tour until 2023 and qualified for the four main tournaments next year.

– He’s at the top and will be among the favorites when we start the Masters in April. Then it’ll be up there, says Haugsrud.
