Virgil van Dijk has suffered a knee injury and must undergo surgery, Liverpool confirm. It is unclear how long it will be out of action.
– Liverpool can confirm that Virgil van Dijk will have to undergo knee surgery following the injury he suffered in the game against Everton, the club writes.
The Liverpool midfielder had to leave the field in the Merseyside derby in the seventh minute after a tough encounter with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. The goalkeeper escaped both penalties and red cards for offside.
It is not clear how long Van Dijk will be out after the operation. The Athletic website writes that he is “likely to miss most of the season.”
“There is no specific timetable for when he will return to action at this time,” Liverpool wrote on its website.
It is claimed that van Dijk will immediately begin rehabilitation with the club’s medical device, as soon as the operation is completed.
Liverpool must now cope without their giant midfielder for the first time since joining the club in January 2018. The Dutchman has played every Premier League game the previous two seasons and has been one of the club’s most important players.
