Vaccine Stops Pandemic – Commentary

Vaccines are an effective way to fight viruses.

The flu shot, for example, means that the majority of the population is increasing these days. Now it is not the flu, but the corona that threatens people and communities around the world.

For months, scientists around the world have worked hard to create a vaccine against COVID-19. The British went ahead in claiming they were on their way. Russia said they had.

Western countries were skeptical that the Russians’ “Sputnik” was good enough.

Therefore, the jubilation was quite natural when it became known that the American pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, in collaboration with the German BioNTech, had unraveled the mystery. Your vaccine appears to have overcome all obstacles to final approval.

The efficiency is 90 percent. That is very good.

This means that nine out of ten people will not be infected if they get vaccinated. So far no side effects have been identified. It’s huge if it’s okay. The vaccine is easy to prepare. It should last with two shots in a short time. Pfizer and BioNTech appear to have won the international vaccine race.

The EU has agreed to 300 million doses of the vaccine. The EU infection control agency says the first coronary vaccination in Europe may start early next year. Norway will have access to the vaccine through an agreement we have with Sweden, an EU country. We are generally slow in this country when it comes to using new drugs.

It will not apply this time. At the moment when Europe is vaccinating, Norway is involved.

It generally takes several years to produce a vaccine. This time it took ten months. It shows what the world can achieve by cooperating and using enormous resources to defeat an enemy that threatens the existence of populations.

Imagine if you could make a similar effort to prevent a global climate catastrophe. Countries must give up some economic growth to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. If you don’t make it, the world is finished anyway.

Nature, weather and disease are intertwined. Human predation on nature forces animals to move away from their natural element. The new environments cause them diseases, which are transmitted to humans.

Covid-19 is imported from China and probably originates from the sale of sick animals.

The distribution of vaccines between countries is a great challenge. The United States and the European Union have already secured sufficient doses. Poor countries in Africa and Asia can have problems. Vaccines must be purchased. Vaccination must be carried out by knowledgeable people. International cooperation must ensure that poor countries receive their doses.

It is also in the interest of rich countries that poor countries get vaccinated.

Debate: “Are cultural differences one of the reasons that infection rates are higher among minorities?”

It is not enough to fight the pandemic in Europe and the United States if it continues to devastate South America and parts of Africa and Asia. So the virus will finally come back to us. Therefore, we are so far away. We cannot take for granted that the vaccine is enough to stop a third corona wave.

Our health authorities have taken a sensible stance on the novelty of this week’s vaccine. Health Minister Bent Høie says this is good news and that the vaccine can probably be used in the new year. Taking the vaccine will be voluntary and it will cost us nothing. If around 70 percent of the population is vaccinated, we will be spared the pandemic.

The closure of the society and other dramatic measures to end the virus have been necessary, but not enough. It looked promising this summer, but now we are back where we were in March. It can get even worse during winter. Businesses will go overboard. Unemployment could rise to staggering new heights.

This year’s Christmas gift for the population is a vaccine against covid-19. Two free needle sticks to the arm could see the country bounce back next year. People have to say yes to that. Just wait for the vaccine to be used.
