In the days of the crown, when we most need the UN, the organization is in the midst of one of its worst crises.

The UN celebrates in these days its 75th anniversary. But there is no happy family of the nations of the world that celebrates the jubilee. Instead, the most important speakers stand up and pay homage to themselves at the expense of the jubilee. At the forefront of the lack of education is, of course, US President Donald Trump, who on Tuesday used his speech to carry out a US election campaign before the election in just six weeks, and reached out to China. . He demanded that China be held accountable for letting go of the “plague” in the world. But he did not mention that the United States these days has a record 200,000 deaths from the corona virus, while China has gained control. This year’s UN General Assembly is, as we understand it, a family business from hell.
The UN is never stronger of what the member states want it to be. But precisely because the world organization struggles with health, and loneliness and the lack of international solidarity is not only a trump card, but also cultivated by countries like Russia, Turkey and, in a way, China, there are reasons to remember the basic reason for being of the UN. As the UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjöld said: “The UN was not created to take humanity to heaven, but to save people from hell.”
Crown crisis contributes to the point that the heads of state and government of the world speak to each other, and not to each other. The only person speaking from the UN green lectern this year is Secretary General António Guterres. National leaders submit their prerecorded speeches, which are displayed on a screen above the rostrum. It is in itself an image of the situation the world is in. At this week’s family reunion from hell, it’s more important that in a long time world leaders can meet face to face when they’re not on the podium. But they can’t.
Crown-krisa er the very picture of why we need a strong and effective UN. Nothing shows better that we are all in the same boat. However, Trump announces the United States outside the UN agency, World Health Organization, and the United States, China and Russia choose not to cooperate with the rest of the world on a vaccine. The world of 2020 is not only fed up with the crown, it is also politically ill.
The UN is in one of its worst crises since its formation after World War II. Guterres warns that the rivalry between the United States and China could end in a new Cold War. If that happened, the UN would be a helpless spectator to a dangerous drama. Because the UN can never be stronger than the member states want it to be.
