(West Bromwich 3-3 Chelsea) Title contender Chelsea stepped on a mine the first half hour against newly promoted West Bromwich, but fought back after being trailing 0-3 at the break.
In overtime, Tammy Abraham secured 3-3 after teammates behind were more than generous with the host’s gifts to the home team at The Hawthorns before the break.
“They have lost two points without discrediting West Bromwich,” Chelsea manager Frank Lampard told Sky after the game.
Already at four minutes, left-back Marco Alonso gave up the ball which resulted in an advantage. The Spaniard headed towards opponent Matheus Pereira, who set the pace and played Callum Robinson, who with a left-foot strike finished off West Bromwich up front.
Then it was Thiago Silva’s turn: at 25 minutes, the current Chelsea captain received a support pass from Jorginho, was inattentive and slipped. Robinson was literally on the move again, leaving the bosses in a cloud of dust and placing his second of the day behind Willy Caballero.
– Thiago made a mistake. He’s lived long enough to figure it out, Lampard told Sky.
Just two minutes later, Chelsea also managed to pass with a dead ball: a corner was sent diagonally to the field Darnell Furlong, he headed towards a lone Kyle Bartley at the five-meter line. West Bromwich’s stopper was never offside and could make it 3-0. That’s the result of the breakdown after an extremely effective round of Championship two last season.
– Marcos loses his mark. Obvious mistakes, Lampard calls it.
Frank Lampard’s team dwindled early in the second half at Mason Mount, and Callum Hudson-Odoi has created tension in the last 20 by putting up one more. The Chelsea player piled on new signing Kai Havertz before placing second for the team. In the end, Abraham got 3-3.
