Linn Wiik wrote that Erna Solberg is a dictator and Norway is a dictatorship. Shortly after, TV2 had to jump in and change several statements.

On Sunday, TV 2 journalist Linn Wiik wrote an article in TV2’s opinion section titled “We live in a dictatorship.”

He writes, among other things, that Norway is a dictatorship and that Erna Solberg is Norway’s most famous dictator in recent times:

“From being the best country in the world to live in, we are now citizens of a dictatorship. Because there is no doubt about that: we live in a dictatorship,” Wiik writes in the first version of the article.

The reactions came swiftly after the post Sunday night. Several questioned whether the statements were intended to be satire or serious.

Bergens Tidende’s political commentator Morten Myksvoll was banned from tweeting from the start that Wiik has no idea what a dictatorship is.

Less than 24 hours after publication, TV 2 has changed both the content of the article and the full title.

Ask for a changelog in the case

The third edition is now called “We are very bored”, and no longer “We live in a dictatorship”. Throughout the text, now there is also dictatorship in imitation.

Now Myksvoll is also reacting to the fact that TV 2 has not specified exactly what changes they have made to a changelog in the case.

However, on top of the case, TV 2 has written:

“In the original text, the main title was We live in a dictatorship. This was changed after publication. To emphasize that the author of the article does not literally mean that we live in a dictatorship, the dictatorship is inserted in« », in the text moderate. Several paragraphs have also been added, which are marked in the text “.

TV 2 news editor Karianne Solbrække tells VG that they just haven’t had time to enter a changelog with more details yet:

– We just haven’t gotten that far. We will have it in writing more clearly, says Solbrække.

TV 2: – The work of journalists to ask questions

Solbrække further says that the text is intended to be a mixture of seriousness and squinting at crown measurements.

– The core of this text deals with a concern that Wiik has as a result of the laws of the crown. It is the journalists’ job to ask questions when enforcing measures against the injuries it potentially inflicts on our society, explains the news editor.

However, he admits that the genre of satire is demanding and that this time they were not quite right.

– We recognize that we miss the genre here. We couldn’t explain well enough what he really meant. This led us to make a series of adjustments to emphasize what the intention was in the text, says Solbrække.

CALLS FOR PUBLIC DEBATE: TV 2 news editor Karianne Solbrække admits they missed the satirical genre this time. At the same time, it asks for space to discuss public decisions during the pandemic. Photo: Tore Kristiansen

She emphasizes that Wiik is not against the measures, as many first interpreted him.

– She follows all the measures herself and supports them, but at the same time sees as her task to be critical. During the crown and the measures that have been implemented, we have seen that there is also a lack of public space to be able to discuss the decisions that are made, says Solbrække.

TV 2 still takes full responsibility for many misinterpreting the post.

– We can never accuse people of having misunderstood, so we have not done our job well enough. We must take this as one more lesson.
