– 75 years after the Second World War and the establishment of the UN, we are once again faced with a great global challenge. We are fighting a battle against an invisible enemy, the China virus, which has claimed countless lives, President Donald Trump said during his speech.

Trump reached out to China and accused the country of infecting the world with the coronavirus.

“At the beginning of the pandemic, China stopped domestic travel while allowing flights out of the country and infected the world,” Trump said.

“The UN must hold China accountable for its actions,” he said.

China responded to the accusations

Shortly after Trump’s speech, Chinese President Xi Jinping responded to the accusations.

– China has no intention of waging a hot or cold war with any country, Xi said in his speech to the assembly.

– We will continue to resolve conflicts with others through dialogue and negotiations, he said.

The 75th UN General Assembly takes place online.

Historical General Assembly

This year’s general meeting is heavily affected by the corona pandemic. The headquarters is almost empty, the heads of state are at home and, for the first time in history, the meeting is taking place online.

Speeches are submitted via video link and recorded in advance.

Speakers also include Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The week of the summit takes place at the same time that the UN turns 75. And as world leaders grapple with a global health crisis.

Warns against a new cold war

– The pandemic has changed our assembly to the unrecognizable. But it has made it more important than ever, said UN Secretary General António Guterres when he opened the meeting.

The UN leader warned of a new Cold War between the United States and China.

– We are heading in a very dangerous direction. Our world cannot afford a future in which the two largest economies split the world in a major break, he said.

– Covid-19 puts us all to the test

Prime Minister Erna Solberg has also recorded a video in advance. Her speech will not be broadcast until the general debate on Saturday.

NRK was allowed to participate in the recording in the Prime Minister’s office.

– Covid-19 puts us all to the test. Will we be able to face the biggest global challenge since the UN was created ?, asks the Prime Minister in his speech.

She cautions against walking alone.

WHO: Registration week number

The corona pandemic appears to be growing in size around the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports a record number since the last weekly estimate, of almost 2 million infected.

This is a 6 percent increase from the previous week. The highest number of cases recorded in a single week since the pandemic began.

At the same time, the number of new deaths is decreasing. Last week, 37,700 crown-related deaths were recorded, a 10 percent decrease from the previous week.
