Donald Trump may get 12 million more votes than four years ago, but that’s far from the only blow Democrats have suffered during this year’s election.

Not all votes are counted yet, but calculations show the president could end up with as many as 74.9 million votes, according to statistikkguruen Nate Silver, which runs the FiveThirtyEight site.

That’s just over 11.9 million votes more than when Donald Trump became president four years ago, if the statistician is correct.

In 2016, Donald Trump won with 62,984,828 individual votes, and because of America’s electoral system, that was enough to surpass Hillary Clinton’s 65,853,514 votes.

Trumps USA i krise

While sitting president has traditionally proven to be an advantage when running for office, this was billed as a tough pick for Republican Trump.

In this sense, the increase in the number of votes can be surprising.

The United States, for which it has been responsible for the past four years, has been stunned by the corona pandemic. Many believe that Trump’s laid-back attitude toward infection control has been one of the reasons why More than 230,000 Americans have died from the virus.

The US economy and job market are not doing very well after the pandemic, and the wallet is also an important factor in voting among Americans. Racial discrimination in the country has been exposed through several cases of murder and violence, and the subsequent large Black Lives Matter demonstrations. It has also been revealed that Trump has barely paid taxes in the past 10 years.

– It is extremely surprising that he has expanded his base after these four years in power, especially when figures have consistently shown that he is more unpopular than popular, Civita adviser Eirik Løkke tells VG.

Won almost all ethnic groups

CNN Election Day Polls shows that Trump has improved since 2016 in all ethnic groups except white men, the Civita adviser notes. He thinks it may have been Trump’s “Law and Order” campaign that worked better than many thought.

– Support may indicate that there are many who feel that it would be a great loss to them if the police presence were to weaken. Several minorities, in particular, live in vulnerable areas, where the police are important to combat violence and crime, says Løkke, summarizing:

– He has engaged and reached out to Americans, who were happy with the work he has done or who fear what America would be like if Biden took over, explains the US insider.

The Democrats’ Problem

Throughout the election campaign, Trump has tried to portray the Democrats as a radical leftist alternative that threatens the safety of the people if they come to power. Perhaps the voters have taken it seriously, and then the Democratic campaign has failed to correct this impression, the Civita adviser believes.

– I think the Democrats’ approach to the “awakening” – being vigilant about social injustice, the “Black Lives Matter” campaign and criticism of the police has helped mobilize Trump voters. Also, I don’t think the network has contributed positively in terms of attracting moderate voters in the middle, he says and continues:

– “Take funds from the police” must be one of the dumbest slogans ever. It is not the case that you have to choose between a racist police or a state without police, it is possible to agitate for police reform without abolishing the police.

Løkke is still unsure whether the Democrats could have done so much differently, with a view to limiting the “Trump effect.”

– The problem is that if you choose something, you take something else. We can ask questions about whether Biden was the right candidate: He doesn’t exactly shine his body energy and there has been a lot of digital campaigning. But it is not a fact that they could have done otherwise to get votes, and Biden does get, after all, more votes than the Democratic candidates before him.

However, there are many reasons to believe that the result is disappointing for the Democrats, who have also delivered several blows:

The party’s hopes of obtaining a majority in the Senate do not appear to be satisfied by the voters. Yet Democrats retain a majority in the House of Representatives, but here too they have lost seats and the majority has shrunk.

– A sign of illness

Another obvious factor as to why Trump has more votes is that turnout this year has been the highest in the United States in 120 years.

66.9 percent of Americans have voted, and we have to go back to 1900 for such a large turnout. A high turnout can testify to a positive trend, a great commitment to society, but in this case there is something else behind it, says US researcher Hilmar Mjelde from NORCE in Bergen.

– High participation is a sign of illness. Voters are mobilizing because they are afraid of losing the America they want. And they are driven by discontent with their opponents. It is the reflection of the commitment to the party itself, explains the NORCE researcher to VG.
