– Unfortunately, I don’t have a good answer, says Tønseth when asked by NRK what his status is at the moment.
Adressa wrote on Friday morning that the national team management is refusing to start the ski slopes in Sjusjøen. Tønseth himself and full coach Eirik Myhr Nossum tell NRK that the student has not trained in the last week and therefore naturally faces the competitions to prepare for much more important qualifying races for the WC in January.
– The problem
There is one thing in particular that bothers Tønseth after a variable start to the season.
In the first distance during the cross-country opening in Beitostølen in November, he started with a very encouraging fifth place in 15 kilometers in classic. Not far from the best teammates of the national team. However, the next day was a recession. In the freestyle part he was no better than number nine, far behind the winner.
At Ruka last weekend, he felt his body on alert during the prologue of the sprint. But the next two races of the minitour were well below average. History repeated itself for the second week in a row: he did not meet a day or two after a competition.
– The body could barely withstand two races at Beitostølen. In Finland it was very bad after pique. Then you just have to pull the brake. He couldn’t bear it. Recovering fast enough and getting ready for the next day is a problem. We have to find the reason for that.
– brutal
That feeling is terrible when you’re in the middle of a competition, he says.
– When you go cross-country skiing and you’re not in shape … You can’t understand and understand how people can walk so fast. When you’re out there, keep going and people fly by. It is brutal. Competing when you are not in battle is not good for the body or the psyche.
– It’s wrong?
– I do not know. I don’t have a clear answer.
Point to NM
The last few days he has barely trained, he has taken it easy and therefore is ahead of the Norgescup races at Sjusjøen. The amounts are and will be less than they should be. At least for a while later.
Plans A, B and C are launched. It is the last emergency plan that applies. It’s about having a plan ready in the near future that will ensure good performances and form during the Scandinavian Cup in Lygna on the first weekend of January, and not least the National Championship at home in Granåsen in Trondheim at the end of the same month.
Then the last places in the World Cup will be awarded. Tønseth intends to participate in that train.
– I have a month to train. I hope I can stack my body on my legs and be able to ski quickly again. I hope I can get back to normal within New Mexico.
– It’s about restarting
Full technician Eirik Myhr Nossum says he hasn’t responded to Tønseth’s problems either, but says the two have found a solution at least in the short term. Because Tønseth has a hard time.
– It’s about rebooting, logging out completely and not training for a while. I almost think you came back in the spring. Exercise very little, relax, and have a good plan for when you start exercising again. And then you don’t start with 30 hours of training a week right away. He takes it gradually, Nossum says.
– What complicates everything is that we are in the competition season and January will be important. It will go to a qualifying race and a World Cup. You just have the time and the way to do it.
Must prioritize
– But will Tønseth be able to qualify for what he wants to go for?
– If possible. But the probability of managing the three distances (50, 30 and 15 kilometers) in the World Cup begins to be marginal. But I keep threatening that he can go fast and one of the fastest in the world at a distance or two, says Nossum.
– The challenge for him will be to go very close to many outlet races without suffering some kind of collapse. It may be better to go a fast race, qualify for the World Cup, than to start very wide. We have talked about it. He will ski, but some distances are the main focus.
