The winner is the American Gitanjali Rao, 15, who is behind several inventions.

It is the first time that Time magazine has named him “Child of the Year.” That Gitanjali Rao appeared on the cover has several reasons.

In 2017, he invented a device that can detect lead in drinking water using nanosensors. He came up with the idea after the Flint drinking water scandal.

Recently, he also invented an application that, using artificial intelligence, will detect bullying on the Internet.

– No matter how insecure the world feels, it is comforting that each new generation gives hope, writes the magazine.

Actress and activist Angelina Jolie interviewed the 15-year-old from Denver, Colorado.

– I don’t look like a typical scientist. He is usually an older white male. It’s almost as if people get roles based on their gender, age and skin color, says Rao.

Now he wants to inspire others to find solutions to the world’s problems.

The last time Time magazine was named “Person of the Year,” it was won by Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg. So she was the youngest to win the award.

In this year’s selection of “Child of the Year”, there were a total of five children among the finalists. There were more than 5,000 nominees in the competition.

The purpose of the award is to identify the next generation of leaders.
