Shortly before Donald Trump announced that he would take threats of a TikTok ban seriously, the app’s Chinese owners decided they want to take over the American side of the business.

VG updates the case!

According to the Reuters news agency, the Chinese company ByteDance, owner of the popular video-sharing application TikTok, accepted the offer of the Oracle company to buy the US part of the business.

The Wall Street Journal and the AP news agency also report that ByteDance has chosen Oracle.

Neither Oracle nor ByteDance have confirmed the information.

TikTok has around 800 million users around the world.

The Microsoft company early announced its interest in buying TikTok in the US, but they reported on Monday night that ByteDance informed them that their offer had been rejected.

We are confident that our offering would have been good for TikTok users while also protecting national security interests, Microsoft writes in a statement.

US President Donald Trump has announced that the app will be banned in the US if the US company is not acquired by a US company by September 20.

US authorities are concerned that user data ends up in the wrong hands. In a presidential order in August, Trump said that TikTok poses a threat to the security of the United States because it could be used in campaigns by the Chinese government to spread false information. Trump also notes that they collect data on users.

“The United States must take aggressive action against TikTok owners to protect our national security,” he wrote, among other things.

TikTok has been implicated in China’s conflicts with various countries and was recently banned in India, along with 58 other Chinese apps.

The company behind the app, BydeDance, has repeatedly denied allegations that they store information about American users in China and share information with Chinese authorities.

In August, the US authorities sued to stop the ban attempt.
