British ministers want new laws that could ruin a Brexit deal. The EU’s chief negotiator is asking the British to adhere to the deal they have agreed to.
The British government is planning legislation that will overturn key parts of the Brexit deal, Britain’s Financial Times newspaper reported on Sunday.
The changes concern the highly inflamed areas of the deal, which include customs duties for Northern Ireland and state aid, and will be announced on Wednesday, the British press writes.

The news is poorly received by diplomats in Brussels, and changes in the law could lead to a breakdown in trade negotiations between the UK and the EU, writes the Financial Times.

The fear is that the changes in the law will “remove the legal force” for parts of the divorce settlement in terms of state aid and Northern Ireland customs, according to the Financial Times.
Since the British voted to leave the EU, it has been a challenge to secure an open border between Northern Ireland and Ireland, while the British will no longer be part of the EU internal market.

In Northern Ireland, leaks about changes to the law have been greeted with concern.
“When the Brexit negotiations between the EU and the British government enter their eighth round this week in London, any threat of withdrawal from the Irish Protocol will represent a treacherous betrayal damaging the Irish economy and the Good Friday Agreement,” writes Nord. -Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister Michelle O’Neill on social media, according to Irish RTE.
