Thorbjørn Jagland launches the first volume of his autobiography “You Will Own It Yourself” today.

Here he writes in detail about the events that led to his resignation as party leader in 2002.

It came after a long leadership feud with Jens Stoltenberg. The stress and media storm she was in made her feel bad in January 2002, the day after a harrowing party meeting, she says in the book.

Collapsed

In his book, he recounts how the desperate day started, but went to his office at the Storting as usual.

“It suddenly turned black for me and I collapsed. My secretary Turid Hellgren found me on the ground and notified the emergency room. An ambulance took me to Rikshospitalet.” he tells Jagland.

He also mentions the much-talked about chicken trick for NRK Bård Tufte Johansen’s profile and the “Open Mail” show.

Dressed in a yellow chicken costume, Johansen jumped on TV 2’s live broadcast outside Rikshospitalet where Jagland was.

Amid what were supposed to be chicken noises, Johansen yelled, “Now we must be nice, we must not be naughty to Jagland.”

– tasty

Thorbjørn Jagland, who is now retired, describes the trick as follows in his book:

“In the evening, the NRK entertainment department took the opportunity to put on a show outside of Rikshospitalet. I don’t know if they meant well, but the so-called chicken stunt was disgusting.”

He says the family reacted strongly. They were reunited with their son Anders, with grandparents from both sides present.

“They cried when they saw the scene outside Rikshospitalet.” he says.

Dagbladet has yet to get a comment from Bård Tufte Johansen.

He explained at the time that the feature that never aired on NRK was intended to be a media critique. But he has also admitted that the point of the trick was perhaps a little weak.

I went to tel aviv

After a week-long stay in Rikshospitalet, Jagland decided to leave to get to work.

He went to Tel Aviv and explains why in the book.

“Many wondered why I traveled to such a troubled corner of the world as Israel. The answer was that he had good friends there. Mona Juul had become an ambassador in Tel Aviv, and Terje Rød-Larsen lived with her there. “

Chose to retire

In Israel, he made the decision to resign as the Labor leader. Hospitalization was an important reason, he clarifies:

– Why did I come to the conclusion that I had to go home and announce that I would resign at the national meeting this fall? Yes, that was the fear of what the doctor had said. I had to get out of the stressful situation, otherwise it would have more health consequences. I saw that the family was suffering. Anders and Henrik learned about the negative characteristics of everyday life and leisure on a daily basis. He knew how difficult it was. I could defend myself. They couldn’t. ” he writes.
