– There are some tears and there is a lump in the throat. This means a huge amount, football is the most important thing for this city here, it always has been, says Fredrikstad patriot and commentator Dag Solheim to VG, by phone from Fredrikstad Stadium.

November 17, 2017 was one of the darkest days in the club’s powerful history.

Notodden became too strong in qualifying and Fredrikstad was relegated to the 2nd division, eight years after silver at the then Tippeligaen.

Two lost heats later and Fredrikstad secured the long awaited promotion to the Obos league with the gala owner over Brattvåg.

– In fact, it was time, after playing in this division for three years. It will be a new everyday life, simply. Now we just have to take the next step. The interest here in the city, and the resources here at the club, belong to the top series. I already hope that next year we can take another step, says Terje Høili, a long-time investor at VG, one of the club’s biggest contributors.

He cautions that it is “natural” for him to be even more offensive after the promo, and he thinks the entire city will get on the label to get another promo.

Short process

It soon became clear that Fredrikstad was looking to do a short process. After several obvious shirt-pulling incidents, Thomas Drage got himself booked.

From then on, Fredrikstad was back in the Obos league.

The champagne came early
