The director of the men’s national handball team, Christian Berge, has selected the following players for the Egypt World Cup:
Goalkeepers: Robin P. Haug, Kristian Sæverås, Espen Christensen, Torbjørn Bergerud. Goalkeepers will be reduced to three on January 2.
Edge Players: Magnus Jøndal, Kristian Bjørnsen, Kevin Maagerø Gulliksen, Alexander C. Blonz.
Backs: Sander Sagosen, Sander A. Øverjordet, Kent Robin Tønnesen, William Aar, Gøran Johannessen, Christian O ‘Suillivan, Simen Holand Pettersen, Harald Reinkind, and Magnus Abelvik Rød.
Line players: Bjarte Myrhol, Henrik Jakobsen, Petter Øverby, Thomas Solstad.
TV 2 was able to write last week that Bjarte Myrhol was relevant to the World Cup after struggling with a shoulder injury for a long time. Confirmation arrived on Monday.
– It’s very clear mentally. There’s no question about that, says Christian Berge on TV 2.
– How important is it to have Myrhol with you?
– He is one of the best string players in the world. What you get off the field is professionalism and care for those around them. Bjarte is kind of the leader in this gang, says Berge.
TV 2 handball expert Bent Svele is also aware of how important it is to bring the 38-year-old to Egypt.
Mørk believes Norway has gained a new dimension ahead of the European Championship sprint
– Of course, it is extremely important. He is a leader in the group, he is a captain and he has always been at the forefront. We cross our fingers to know that the shoulder injury has healed. Hopefully we’ll see him for a few minutes on Saturday for the club team, says Svele.
Sander Sagosen is also happy that Myrhol is involved. The 38-year-old missed the European Championship in Trondheim in January.
– He goes first in the war. When you go to a championship without your army commander, it obviously feels like something is missing. I know you are prepared and motivated. If he’s 100 percent healthy, there are few strings players in the world who are better than him, says Sander Sagosen.
– Traveling with or without getting off is a bit like night and day. It is extremely important both on and off the field, says the best handball player in the world to TV 2.
So far four goalkeepers have been eliminated. The plan is for this to be reduced to three, but due to the uncertain form of Kristian Sæverås and Espen Christensen.
– Sæverås has just returned and Christensen has just returned from a knee injury. We travel a lot with three goalkeepers, but so far we have taken four. Then we’ll see what we do when we leave, says the national team manager Berge.
Two debutants
Robin T. Haug, Thomas Solstad and Simen Holand Pettersen have never been in a championship with the national team before, but the latter has debuted with the flag on their chest. Holand Pettersen is the son of former national team coach Gunnar Pettersen.
– I like the charisma and ambition that Thomas shows when he plays. He’ll probably get a role that he’ll step into and contribute to defense, Berge tells TV 2.
Magnus Gullerud (29) has not been removed due to a recent operation. The Magdeburg player was central when Norway claimed bronze during the European Championship in Trondheim in January.
– Solstad is with Gullerud because he had to report. He will probably be tried against Tom Kåre Nikolaisen. Solstad has performed well over time and has experience in the Champions League. I think it makes sense to take him in front of Nikolaisen, says TV 2 handball expert Bent Svele.
– Says something about the team when Tangen has to stay home
Norway is looking for revenge after losing the 2019 World Cup final against Denmark, and already on January 14 things are going well for the Norwegians.
The great power France is in the opposite half of the field the first match. The United States and Austria are also in the group.
Bjarte Myrhol can reach the World Cup
– They travel with 20 players, which makes sense. They will probably have to enter a bubble in Egypt, and then it can be difficult to go down during the championship, says Bent Svele, a TV 2 handball expert.
Otherwise Kent Robin Tønnesen is back, which means that E claim Tangen does not get a place in the squad.
– It says something about the squad when a player like Tangen stays at home.
Christian Berge is aware of what Tønnesen offers the squad.
– It’s been a long time since Kent Robin was involved. I’m very happy that he’s back on the squad, says Berge, adding:
– It’s a joy spreader. There is always life around Kent Robin.
