The list of crown-free municipalities is getting shorter. But there are still 12 of the country’s 356 municipalities that have not had a single case of corona since the pandemic began.

Kåfjord in North Troms is one of them.

– I think it’s a small dose of coincidence and a small dose of luck, says municipal chief doctor Anita Monsen Pedersen in Kåfjord.

– But the population here has managed to deal with the guidelines. They have been incredibly talented.

The municipality now defies national infection control rules. They are tired of living with such strict measures as the rest of the country.

– We have had a stable infection status throughout the region for weeks and months. There has been no infection in neighboring municipalities either. That is why we believe that it is justified to open up, he says.

They have already given the green light to sports activities of all ages. They still comply with covid-19 regulations regarding the number of people gathered in one place. The usual infection control rules still apply.

But they are more open than most. And now they also allow all events to take place.

Kåfjord Mayor Bernt Lyngstad is proud that the municipality is infection free.

– We want to thank the public for loyally defending and supporting the measures. I think it means a lot to the people that we are now opening up, says the mayor.

Praise the inhabitants

The other municipalities with a zero contagion rate consider it different. NRK has called everyone and they all say they follow national infection control rules.

The Kvitsøy municipal doctor in Rogaland is not recommending any further measures at this time.

Several municipalities highlight that they have also followed the same guidelines as their neighboring municipalities. As Namsskogan municipality in Trøndelag.

– We are a transit municipality in Namdalen, which is a region of 11 municipalities. We are proud that we do not have the infection, but I must admit that it is probably a bit of luck. We will at least praise all the inhabitants who have risen up, says Mayor Stian Brekkvassmo.

Several mayors praise citizens for their commitment. The Leka municipality in Trøndelag adopted strict measures in March last year and has never had local regulations.

– We have had several requests and we have a contingency that works in a preventive manner. That and our responsible inhabitants have probably been the reason we have been free from infection, says Mayor Elisabeth Helmersen.
