Therese Johaug’s chin dropped when she looked at her own legs – Johaug liters of fluid on her legs:

HAFJELL (Dagbladet): The much talked about and unusual overload of Therese Johaug left clear marks on the best cross-country skier in the world.

In fact, traces so clear that the 32-year-old from Dalsbygda could hardly believe her eyes when she looked down at her legs in the wake of her gradually known mountain holidays in a beautiful and spectacular setting in Lofoten.

Johaug tells Dagbladet that his thigh muscles became hugely swollen after the solid ride up the mountain, followed by an even longer car ride, with a sitting position not ideal for recovery and blood flow.

– We took a 6-7 hour trip on the last day, then we bathed in the sea and jumped in the car and took the ferry to Bodø and drove 20 hours at night, where we barely slept, Johaug tells Dagbladet and further describes how congestion manifested in your body:

– My legs were so swollen that I couldn’t see my kneecaps. I had a lot of fluid all over my body. It was a total reaction, an overload, you might say.

Three liters of liquid on the legs.

Johaug’s thighs were filled with abnormal amounts of fluid, he says.

– I had a lot of fluid in my body. I had almost three liters of extra fluid on my legs when I got home, she tells Dagbladet, 32.

– What were you thinking then?

– My father, I thought. It felt good on my legs, Johaug responds.

– It is unusual when you are used to having a body that listens and plays in teams. Suddenly you find yourself in a situation where you don’t know your body.

– Nor did I feel on edge when I passed Sandnes. I went to competitions there and kept training, but it never got better. I finally had to put my foot on the ground. I knew this wouldn’t change in a day, she says.

Heidi Weng drew back when a tree blew off the end during the training session at Hafjell. Check out the first episode of Dagbladet’s TV series “The Ski Girls” here:

The measurement created total confusion

As Dagbladet wrote on Friday, Johaug recounted how a lactate measurement gave a misleading picture of her condition and could have tricked the 32-year-old into reporting well, continuing normal training, and performing a life-threatening blast.

– In the first lactate profile, the numbers were good. But there was still something bubbling. I said that although the numbers were good, I have a completely different feeling. I felt the numbers were lying, Johaug tells Dagbladet.

– In the second lactate measurement, I got the responses to the sensations I had. They were the worst lactate measurements I’ve had in a long time. This second measure showed that it was okay to trust my gut, says Johaug.

– At the Olympic summit we saw that the oxygen consumption and everything was there, but the lactate level was too high. On the second lactate test, I was unable to complete what I normally do. So Erlend said that now we stop the test. There is no point in ending.
