Therese Johaug: – Dreaming of children

Dalsbygda cross country skier Therese Johaug (32) has had ups and downs during her skiing career.

Most people probably remember the great nightmare Johaug experienced when she was arrested for doping in October 2016.

A mouth ulcer led to the use of the wrong lip cream, which contained the doping substance clostebol, which eventually degenerated into an 18-month cross-country ski ban.

The entire life of the Dalsbygda woman was turned upside down, but by her side was her partner and former rower Nils Jakob Hoff (35) as her biggest supporter.

– You have been the most important person in these difficult times. It has been unique. He wouldn’t have made it without him, Johaug had previously told Dagbladet about his girlfriend.

From distance to coexistence

It was in 2014 that it was revealed that Johaug and Hoff had become lovers after keeping a low public profile. Last fall they took the relationship a step further and became partners after being in a long distance relationship for several years.

On Wednesday, Johaug is a guest on Ida Fladen’s podcast “Ida with her heart in her hand,” and there she talks about her relationship with Hoff.

Despite having been lovers for six years, Johaug admits she was still excited about what it would be like and living under the same roof.

– We are a bit used to having time to ourselves, and sometimes it is good to get up in the morning and have a coffee alone. But at the same time, it’s incredibly good to have the everyday life together that we’ve missed the most, and it’s actually they who are the most in this life, Johaug says, adding that they thrive as partners.

Dreaming of children

On the podcast, Johaug also lifts the veil from the long-distance relationship they’ve been through, and believes it has been an advantage that they have both been elite athletes, as they know what life is like. However, Hoff left his rowing career on the shelf last year and today he completed his medical degree.

How to maintain a long distance relationship for so many years, there are probably more wondering. For Johaug, however, the answer is simple.

– I think it is important to see each other, give us confirmation and trust each other. I think that is the reason why we have made it work for so many years. That there has been no problem is because we trust each other one hundred percent, and that we have a very relaxed relationship with him. We managed to understand the life of the other person, he continues.

The podcast also talks about Johaug and his partner’s future plans, and then the cross-country skier reveals that she dreams of children.

– I hope eventually there will be some children. You are at the age where you start to count a little on your fingers and you think that maybe you have to start soon, time flies. So far we have a house and it is very nice, she says, adding that she hopes they will be well in the future as well.

First encounter revealed

Nils Jakob Hoff has previously revealed the first encounter with the cross-country skier. During a visit to “P3morgen” in 2016, Hoff explained that she met her fiancé for the first time on a plane, having participated in a rowing competition and Johaug had been in a meeting with her cross country colleagues.

Hoff revealed on the radio show that Johaug sat a few rows in front of him on the plane, but the two were not speaking to each other. Hoff, on the other hand, sat and watched “Game of Thrones” on his Mac and felt peace and no danger.

– Then the head of the Roforbundet comes and says I must go. There was a guy who had passed out in the back of the plane. There was no doctor on board, and as a medical student, I had to go back, Hoff recalled.

The 2013 world rowing champion revealed that he got very nervous and thought “oh shit, I’m not quite ready for this!” But that he got up from his seat.

– And then I see that she turns and I just: “hi!”. And then I just backtrack, Hoff continued empathetically in the “P3morgen” studio, which made then-hosts Silje Nordnes and Ronny Brede Aase laugh.
