There are still opportunities for Biden without a majority in the Senate

Everything seems to be in place for Joe Biden to win the majority and become the next president of the United States after a harrowing election campaign and an exciting election, despite the vote counting still continuing in various places.

The question is what will you be able to achieve in that case. Democrats win a majority in the House of Representatives, although it is shrinking compared to before the election. But the goal of taking over the Senate seems distant. On Friday afternoon, both parties have 48 senators and four seats remain.

There is a particular tension in Georgia. It could end in a rematch in January for the two state Senate seats, according to The New York Times. Neither candidate has received at least 50 percent of the vote so far, which is required for victory. The outcome in Georgia may determine who ultimately gets the majority in the Senate.

Meanwhile, it is a deeply divided America that will carry on, and Biden may end up in the same situation as Barack Obama after reelection in 2012. Two years later, the Senate leaned in favor of the Republicans and they repeatedly nailed sticks. on the wheels of Obama’s policies..

May achieve little

If Republicans stay in control, Biden will likely be able to achieve even less than he bargained for, according to the Financial Times.

In that case, there is no chance that he can abolish so-called filibuster tactics in the Senate. It is a procedure that prevents proposals from being put to a vote and approved by giving endless speeches and speeches.

Biden will also be unable to expand the United States with new states, such as Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, or expand the Supreme Court with even more justices. If a court seat opens, where Republicans now have a six-to-three majority, Senate Leader Mitch McConnell could block Biden’s candidate.

The Senate approves, among other things, the president’s candidates for key positions in administration and government. They also have the power to stop parts of the president’s policies.

Electoral promises and opportunities

Dagsavisen has previously written what Biden wants to do as president. In addition to dealing with the coronary pandemic, finding work and getting finances back on track, his goal is for all Americans to have access to good health care.

He wants to build and expand Obamacare (“Affordable Care Act” is the official term), which he helped introduce when he was vice president and which ensured more people had access to health care. Better education, fighting climate change, restoring America’s position in the world, and fighting racism and inequality are other important points.

Some of this will be possible even without a majority in the Senate, writes Max Ufberg in GEN, which is the official political and cultural publication of the Medium website. Although Biden runs the risk of facing a presidential term in which he has to resort to presidential orders to get what he wants. Presidential orders are often used to get through politics without first having to pass them in Congress.

Ufberg writes that during his first 100 days as president, Biden could:

* Take control of the pandemic. Biden has already laid out his plan on how to do it.

* Accelerate the economy. A new rescue package is likely a priority, and Biden has advocated for several direct payments.

* Act internationally. Biden wants the United States to rejoin the Paris Agreement and the Iran nuclear deal, and again to support the World Health Organization.

* Build a broken state apparatus. Several federal jobs have been left blank under Trump. Biden can work to get the device working again.

Through presidential orders, you will have several other options, but the Slate website emphasizes that ruling America that way will not be easy.

The pair of radars?

Mitch McConnell could be the key to Biden’s presidency.

Biden and McConnell could be America’s next “power couple,” or the radar couple, Politico writes. When Obama was president, Biden’s propensity to compromise with McConnell was a constant source of irritation among the more liberal forces of the Democrats.

– Some of the Democrats said “Joe will always make a deal.” And I think “obviously that’s his job,” Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin said in an interview Thursday.

A majority for the Democrats in the Senate, led by Chuck Schumer, would have been preferable to the new president of the United States. But Biden and McConnell have been colleagues for several years. McConnell was the only Republican in the Senate to attend the funeral of Biden’s son Beau in 2015.

“They’ve negotiated big things before,” said Democratic Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware.

Biden has said that while he has campaigned as a Democrat, he will rule as president of the entire United States. The presidential job itself is not a political party, Biden said.

– More deaths

A divided Congress will not only hinder Biden’s success, it will also have major knock-on effects for the rest of the United States, Slate writes. They look back at the economic recession during Obama’s last six years as president.

Back then, it was the conservative wing of the Republican Tea Party that created challenges in the House of Representatives. Among other things, in the form of a conflict over budget cuts and the debt ceiling, but also an attempt to repeal the health reform.

When Republicans won a majority in the Senate in 2014, McConnell made sure, among other things, to block a majority of Obama-appointed judges. That included Merrick Garland, whom Obama appointed to the Supreme Court.

There was a fierce battle for federal funds, job growth slowed, and recessions hit parts of the Midwest.

“Imagine a rerun, only with more death,” Slate writes.

McConnell has said he’s interested in getting a new crisis package from the crown, after Trump halted negotiations in October. It is not known how much money will be put into the pot in that case.
