It is Friday night at Kulturhuset in Oslo. A year ago, there would have been between 4 and 500 guests here at this time. Now there are people sitting at four or five of the tables in the huge bar.

The sound level is reminiscent of Tuesday morning, and the waiter offers a mask when Aftenposten walks through the door.

At the table with the most people are Lasse Lokøy, Anders Engebretsen, Marit Meløe and Emilie Østebø. All four work in the culture industry and are worried about the next term.

They say they are willing to contribute to the workforce in the future.

– We just have to be confident that those who decide make the right decisions, says Engebretsen.

Only one drinks beer and they are already on their way home.

In the future, there will be quiet wine nights with close friends.

– I can’t imagine that someone I know is invited to a party now, says Østebø.

New measures

On Friday, the city council leader seriously tightened the crown’s measures.

– Infection rates are at too high a level. We must do what we can to reduce the infection, Raymond Johansen said.

The new measures are dramatic and intrusive to the citizens of Oslo:

  • Complete pour stop.
  • All gyms, cinemas, theaters, swimming pools, playgrounds and similar bars.
  • All indoor events are prohibited.
  • There will be a halt in grassroots adult sports.
  • All cups and tournaments for children and young people are canceled.
  • Red level in upper secondary school and adult education, secondary schools should prepare at the red level.
  • Requirement that stores, shopping centers and the like limit the number of customers to maintain a distance of two meters.
  • Mandate for the use of masks in taxis for drivers and passengers.

– We can not hesitate before such a dramatic event, said the leader of the city council at the press conference on Friday.

He highlighted the nightlife in particular as part of limiting the spread of the infection in Oslo.

– Bars have made a great effort to limit the spread of the infection, but when we introduce a social lockdown in Oslo, the drinking must also stop, said the city council leader.

No rush to party

The new measures will not be formally implemented until Tuesday, but bartender Bjørn Olav Ramfjord believes it will be an extremely quiet evening.

On Saturday night Kulturhuset will be closed until the bar stops. This means that Ramfjord will be fired again.

– It is very boring to sit at home. I started working as a bartender because I like the social aspect of work. There’s not much talk or flirting these days, Ramfjord says.

He says he misses being behind the bar with little customers hanging over the bar while mixing drinks.

Although it is a recession that they are now closing, he thinks it is good to get clarification.

– Now it has been so much coming and going. Now it’s good to get an answer: we close! Especially after the bandage rules came in, it’s eroded, Ramfjord says.
