Novak Djokovic suffered his biggest loss as a professional tennis player in the quarter-final match with Lorenzo Sonego at the ATP tournament in Vienna. The star won only three games in the match.

The vast majority thought Djokovic would go well against a player who really blew himself up in the playoffs last week, but Sonego refuted all predictions.

The Italian edged out Djokovic 6-2, 6-1. These are humiliating numbers for the Serbian world number one, who only once in his career has had to settle for victory in three games. He succeeded in a best-of-five series at the Australian Open in 2005.

Friday’s loss is Djokovic’s first for a “lucky loser” player.

– Clearly my best win. Novak is the best in the world, but I played very well today, Sonego said.

Djokovic has ambition to finish a calendar year as world number one for the sixth time, but the loss in Austria means he has to wait before it becomes formally clear that he is close to the record of legend Pete Sampra.

Casper Ruud started at the ATP tournament in Vienna, but was already eliminated in the first round. Jannik Sinner of Italy won on Wednesday 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.
