The United States recognizes Western Sahara as Moroccan – VG

US President Donald Trump wrote late Thursday that he signed a declaration recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over occupied Western Sahara.

At the same time, Morocco is normalizing relations with Israel, as a result of the United States recognizing Western Sahara as Moroccan. This is the fourth agreement reached between Israel and the Arab countries in the last four months.

Western Sahara, located south of Morocco on the northwest coast of Africa, has been under Moroccan occupation since 1979. Since 1973, the Polisario liberation movement has fought for the independence of Western Sahara and its 650,000 inhabitants.

The African Union recognizes the Polisario as the authority in the area. Both the Security Council and the UN General Assembly have condemned the occupation.

Morocco has had one of the largest Jewish populations in the Middle East and North Africa. Many of them fled to Europe and the United States after Israel formally declared their status in 1948.

The other countries that have signed standardization agreements with Israel are the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan. Before the agreement with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, only two Arab countries had normalized relations with Israel: Egypt in 1979 and Jordan in 1994. The Trump administration is also trying to get Saudi Arabia to normalize its ties with Israel. So far, they have not received approval for this.

In a telephone conversation with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday, Moroccan King Mohammed VI is said to have assured that Morocco is still behind a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

According to the BBC, the Polisario has yet to comment on the United States’ recognition of West Africa as Moroccan.
