A federal court halts the Trump administration’s attempts to restrict the Dhaka program, which protects young immigrants who came to the United States as children. The court believes that Acting Security Minister Chad Wolf was illegally promoted.

This is what the New York district court concluded in a decision on Sunday, several US outlets reported on CNN and NBC News.

Dhaka is estimated to provide accommodation for hundreds of thousands of people in the United States, as long as they do not break the law. However, they do not have the right to citizenship. The program was introduced during the presidency of Barack Obama in 2012 to protect undocumented immigrants and others who came to the United States illegally as children.

Many of them, most from Mexico and Central America, can barely remember their parents’ homeland, often do not speak their language, and resemble any other American.

But without papers, they cannot legally work, obtain a driver’s license or open bank accounts and risk being arrested and deported to a country they do not know at any time.

The restrictions introduced by the acting Security Minister, Chad Wolf, put an end to the approval of new applications and reduce the duration of the renewal from two to one year.

The New York District Court found the changes invalid because Wolf was illegally promoted to the position. The Trump administration first tried to remove the entire program, but the Supreme Court stopped it in May.

Had the program stopped, hundreds of thousands would have been at risk of being expelled from the country, despite being under the age of 16 when their parents brought them into the country.

The decision is another defeat for the Trump administration, which has also previously taken a hard line against the scheme, in part because Trump has believed that Mexico’s border control is too poor. During his presidency, Trump managed to overcome several immigration restrictions, but did not achieve his stated goal of abolishing the Dhaka program.

The decision can be appealed.
