The University of Bergen apologizes for the treatment Professor Svein Larsen has received in the so-called German prank case.
After a student was offended by the professor’s joke during a lecture 15 months ago, there was a media storm surrounding Larsen. Now the University of Bergen apologizes, writes the online newspaper Khrono.
In a letter to the professor, the university admits that some of its statements to the media may have led to Larsen being put in a worse light than it was.
“Nor does the University of Bergen conclude that you have intimidated, harassed or discriminated against any of the students who have given notice,” the letter says.

– I see this as a blank acquittal, full reparation, and a clear admission from the university that I have been treated badly. The “Tyskervits case” should never have been a case, Larsen tells the website.
The situation in which the student felt harassed arose during a conference in August last year. The professor is said to have mentioned his own research on tourism and claimed that “Germans have been here before and now they are creeping in again.”
– I may be sorry I told a joke in bad taste, but I see no reason to apologize. There is also no reason for management to apologize for my statements on my behalf, Larsen told Khrono in June this year.
The student who complained about the joke received NOK 10,000 in compensation.
The teacher has received no compensation or compensation, but has been promoted to three salary tiers, which is equivalent to SEK 70,000 per year. The school says it’s about seniority and scientific output, and that the joke isn’t tied to salary.
