On 2 December Sepideh Kamali (37) was alone at home with his son David (4) in Langhus in the Nordre Follo municipality on the outskirts of Oslo. While he was watching television and playing games, she was eating something when she suddenly felt an intense pain in her stomach.
– There was some chili in the food that I did not know. I had a stomach ache right away and it was a pain that I had never experienced before. On a scale of 1 to 10, it was 9.5, he tells Dagbladet.
It was Østlandets Blad who first wrote about the case.
– Must be taken seriously
Two years ago, Kamali underwent gastric bypass surgery, which is one of the most common operations for morbid obesity.
– After such an operation, you often have reactions in your stomach when you eat foods that you do not eat as often. When you have such reactions, it should be taken seriously. Everyone who has undergone surgery receives a card that they always use, in case they have a reaction when they are in the crowd. The card says I’ve been through this operation, she says.
Calling 113 – Saved Cato 50 miles away
She says she was at her GP’s office last February when, after class, he told her she had a minor stomach ache. Kamali describes the degree of pain as 1, on a scale of 1 to 10. However, the doctor reacted and was sent to Ahus for immediate surgery.
The son called 113
Back on the ground at home. Sepideh lies writhing in pain and cannot utter a word. Suddenly, he hears his son David talking on his phone.
– He said: «Hello, my name is David and I am 4 to 5 years old. Dad is at work. Mom is sick and can’t speak. She needs help. “I managed to call him and asked him to come see me.
The four-year-old had found an app on Kamali’s phone that automatically calls 113. She downloaded it after a course, so you don’t have to say where you are and your name, as it’s registered in the app.
– I picked up the phone and tried to speak. But the person on the other end started yelling at me. She said, “Do you know what you’ve done? He asked a four-year-old to call 113. This should be a child welfare case. I will report more on this, “says Kamali.
According to Kamali, the operator, on the other hand, shouldn’t have been interested in knowing what went wrong with her, or that she had previously undergone gastric bypass surgery.
– I had no idea that my son had called 113. She didn’t believe me, even when I told her how serious this was. I get stressed out just talking about it now in hindsight, he says.
Gastric bypass
- Gastric bypass, or gastric bypass, is one of the most common obesity surgeries in the world.
- Patients offered such an operation receive it after individual and clinical evaluation. Generally, one should have a BMI of more than 35.
- The operation consists of detaching a segment of the small intestine, so that a lesser amount of nutrients is absorbed. This means taking a lower segment of the intestine and connecting it directly to the upper part of the stomach. The result is that the rest of the stomach and small intestine up to the selected segment is not used.
- Major complications after surgery occur less frequently than in 5% of cases. This is despite the fact that morbidly obese patients are at significantly higher risk in all operations.
- Although few patients are affected by major complications, they are always serious for the affected person. Therefore, it is extremely important that the advantages and disadvantages of treatment are carefully reviewed and discussed with the patient in advance, and that bariatric surgery represents the last resort for the patient.

Called and apologized
Eventually, Kamali was taken to the emergency room where she spoke with a nurse who calmed her down.
– He told me this was going to work out. But what I experienced from 113 was sad. David also heard that I was being scolded and asked if I had done something wrong. I have assured you several times in hindsight that what you did was exactly correct.
Eventually, the stomach pain subsided, but Sepideh still feared what the operator would do.
– After two hours, the operations manager called 113 and apologized for what happened. I don’t know how I got the information about the conversation, but it gave me a better feeling again. Now I feel more confident the next time I need help, she says.
Dagbladet has tried to contact the pre-hospital clinic of the Oslo University Hospital, which is responsible for the emergency call and emergency services in Oslo and Viken. They have not responded to the query.
The clinic manager, Sindre Mellesmo, tells Østlandets Blad that they are sorry:
– As a responsible leader, I will fully apologize to the caller and deeply regret how the meeting with our VET center was handled. The situation was quickly grasped by the plant’s operations manager, who contacted the caller with a justified apology. The management of the center was notified immediately and internal measures were implemented.
Furthermore, it says that all callers should ensure that the VET center ensures good and correct handling of all emergency calls.
– We continue that this is also mainly the case, but this incident shows that the opposite can happen. We are sincerely sorry. In the follow-up of the case, we will contact the mother for further follow-up if she so wishes, Mellesmo tells Østlandets Blad.
Thankful for the daycare staff
Now it’s been almost two weeks since it happened and Kamali is fine again. She is very proud of how her son handled the situation.
– I am very happy that they found out about this in kindergarten. The employees are very good and make them understand that it is not a number that you are playing with. He still asks me why I kept the phone off, when what he did was fine. I still have no answer for that, he tells Dagbladet.
After telling Østlandets Blad the story, David received an invitation to visit the air ambulance.
Kamali tells Dagbladet that it is important to her that people do not have a bad impression of the health service because of her experience:
