In these municipalities, the government found the pliers and opened the beer taps this weekend. The outbreak of the mutated virus variant in Nordre Follo has led to serious closures in the Oslo region.

However, there is one municipality that has so far gotten rid of the bar ban: Ullensaker.

– We are not affected by the provisions that apply to many other municipalities. This is partly due to the fact that we are quite a ways from Nordre Follo. Also, there are few movements of Ullensaker residents to that area, says Ullensaker Mayor Eyvind Jørgensen Schumacher (Labor Party), to Børsen.

– Stay at home

One of the immediate measures of the government this weekend was to close the doors of Vinmonopolet in the Oslo area. This created huge queues at the Asker, Bærum and Lier outlets. The government ended up turning around.

In Ullensaker you will find, among other places, Jessheim, which offers a number of restaurants. For some surrounding municipalities, for example Lillestrøm, this is a popular city for weekend emigration.

– What do you want to say to guests from, for example, Oslo or neighboring municipalities who are thinking of visiting your bar?

– Then I’ll ask you to stay home. In order for the measures to have any purpose or effect, we rather encourage people to buy beer in the store and consume it at home. Don’t come here. In any case, Jessheim is not the right place if you think about the city and expect an opening for it.

Although Ullensaker restaurants may remain open, the tap will reopen at 10pm. Alcohol consumption should stop half an hour later. In addition, the alcohol service only applies when ordering food and spirits are excluded from the menu.

– There are strict regulations here and there is no nightlife in that sense. When the situation clears up further and the pandemic is over, we naturally warmly welcome visitors to Jessheim, says the mayor.

Tor Christian Taalesen runs the Hydranten Pub sports bar in Jessheim. He thinks that the situation is worrying, and does not rule out that people thirsty for beer from the neighboring municipalities of Jessheim may arrive.

– It is quite certain that it does, but we cannot ask people exactly where they live. It is clearly a challenge, I thought so when the Strømmen shopping center was also closed. So they come here, says Taalesen.

– Full blow usually

He says those at Hydranten have the capacity to host between 100 and 120 guests, without compromising infection control regulations.

– But we don’t have that many inside. We don’t exactly clean during the day. It’s not so strange when authorities say you shouldn’t visit your neighbor once, Taalesen says.

- They can't do that!

He even went to the bar to watch the big game between Manchester United and Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

– So we had a lot of vacancies. Normally, it would be packaged, says Taalesen.

– No, I’m not really afraid of him when the situation is as it is.

He says that if there is a closure in Jessheim as well, then they are willing to participate in the charity event.

– But we bleed a lot during the day, even if we stay open. People are very reserved when visiting the bar, Taalesen concludes.

Warns

Like the manager of the local sports bar, Mayor Schumacher is not concerned about people making the pilgrimage to Jessheim. However, it warns of possible dramatic consequences should this happen.

– I am concerned about the situation related to the mutated virus. We have introduced measures in many fields and, for the first time in a month and a half, we are seeing a slight decrease. What we are doing now seems to be working. That way, I feel pretty safe.

– But there are other municipalities that have had a resurgence of contagion, where the situation is not entirely clear. If the virus spreads, we must conduct a reevaluation in consultation with the health authorities.
