A baby (9 months) and a woman (73) are among the victims of the homeless man on the pedestrian street of Trier. Police have no indication that the deadly journey was politically motivated.
The case is continually updated.
Police have been in the center of Trier with great force since they were first notified that a car had crossed a pedestrian street in the city and injured several people shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday.
The suspect, a 51-year-old German citizen of the city, had 1.4 per thousand, the prosecution said at a press conference at 7:00 p.m.
Five dead people
Five people have been confirmed dead and several are seriously injured.
Among the victims are a nine-month-old baby, a 73-year-old woman, a 25-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man.
– This is the heaviest day in Trier since WWII, says Mayor Wolfram Leibe. About 700 rescuers have assisted in the city during the day.
SCENE: Armed police officers guard the pedestrian street where the tragedy occurred.
Several are seriously injured
Four other people were seriously injured, five people “relatively seriously injured” and four people slightly injured. Police later say another person was injured, a total of 15.
– The news from Trier makes me very saddened, says German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a statement shared by the government spokesperson on Twitter Tuesday night.
Unknown reason – had per thousand
The alleged perpetrator, a 51-year-old man from the Trier-Saarburg area, has been arrested and detained by the police.
He is a German citizen and was born in Trier, police confirm.
The man lived in the area and is said to have spent the last few days in his car.
He is said to have zigzagged the truck down the pedestrian street, police said at the news conference. A video circulating on social media shows police detaining a man right next to a large gray car with a dented hood.
The Focus newspaper identifies the suspect as “Bernd W.”
The motive for the incident is unknown, but there is no indication that the act was politically motivated:
– We currently have no information on why. The police did not know the detained person before and we have no indication that this is politically motivated, the police write in a press release.
Correction: VG first wrote that it was the police who described the day as the heaviest in Trier since World War II, but the truth is that it was the mayor of the city who said this at the press conference. Police also corrected the old woman’s age from 72 to 73 years. This has been corrected. The corrections were made during the press conference on December 1, 2020.
