Mikael Gunnulfsen surprisingly won the men’s 15km in Beitostølen. Gunnulfsen, who as well as a skier sells GPS devices for trail machines, finished 27.3 seconds ahead of Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, who shook his head as he crossed the finish line.
Hans Christer Holund was third.
– There is a lot of excitement in sport, that’s right. This is a dream. People speak ill of Beito and say that there is very little. If I win this, Beito can be as small as he wants, for me this is a big problem, Gunnulfsen tells NRK.
Clear message: – You cannot talk to the team
While the women had walked in good conditions in Beitostølen, there were heavy snowfalls and heavy gusts during the men’s 15 kilometers.
At 2.5 kilometers it was very even on the track and Emil Iversen led by a few seconds ahead of Gunnulfsen, Simen Hegstad Krüger and Johannes Høsflot Klæbo. From Iversen to 20th place, they were only ten seconds apart.
Klæbo took the lead at five kilometers, but then Gunnulfsen took over. At ten kilometers, Klæbo was almost 14 seconds behind, but it was good on the track.
Gunnulfsen increased the distance to Klæbo in the final kilometers and led by 26 seconds with 2.5 kilometers to play.
The cross country elite simply had to be crushed by Gunnulfsen. Didrik Tønseth was number five, 50 seconds behind today’s winner. Simen Hegstad Krüger number six, 57 seconds behind.
– Today it was difficult to ski. It was not an easy premiere. Maybe we will get better answers tomorrow, Krüger tells TV 2.
– It was a surprise that Gunnulfsen is as good as it is today. He was a runner who could fight for a podium, but he hoped the runners from the national team were the best. Nobody can say that he had better conditions than the runners of the national team. He’s hit extremely well with form and gear, says Petter Soleng Skinstad, cross-country expert from TV 2.
– He works part-time as a GPS salesperson for track machines and also tests and tracks young athletes as a technical trainer, says Skinstad.
– The riders of the national team should convince tomorrow that Gunnulfsen will not get a ticket for Ruka. In my opinion, riders who are in better shape should always go to the World Cup.
The case is being updated!
