Peruvian President Martín Vizcarra resigns and will not contest the vote in the National Assembly where there was a majority on Monday night to remove him.
Vizcarra announced it himself after 105 of the elected representatives, far more than the 87 needed, voted to remove him in a case before a higher court.
The vote marked the latest chapter of political unrest in Peru. The country has the highest death rate in the world in the number of deaths per crown, measured per capita.
In a five-hour debate, elected officials criticized Vizcarra for mishandling the corona pandemic, lack of medical oxygen, misuse of rapid antibody tests, economic decline, and growing poverty caused by the crisis of the crown.
“Due to their negligence and incompetence, we have lost thousands of compatriots,” said one of the elected representatives, Robinson Gupioc.
He rejected the accusations
Vizcarra is also accused of corruption. Elected officials say he received $ 630,000 in bribes on two construction projects when he was governor of a southern province in the country from 2011 to 2014.
Analysts believe that the decision of the elected deputies was an obvious and risky acquisition of power in a country where Vizcarra enjoys great popularity while the National Assembly does not.
In a defense speech before the vote, the president denied doing anything wrong.
Investigated
The accusations of the elected representatives against Vizcarra are being investigated by the country’s prosecutor’s office, but no charges have been filed.
According to the country’s constitution, Manuel Marino, president of the National Assembly, will assume the presidency until the end of the presidential term in July.
Last Monday, the National Assembly voted to try him. It happened less than two months after he survived a vote of no confidence.
