The airline refuses to bring Jens Kvernmo’s dogs – NRK Trøndelag – Local news, TV and radio

– Now I have been tried for adoption and divorced, so it may be time to get home before you are fully grown, laughs Jens Kvernmo.

Steinkjer’s nature lover is in a good mood. The 34-year-old lives with friends or sets up his tent in the evenings.

DINNER: The 34-year-old has fished and hunted mostly for his own food throughout the trip, aside from the dew-covered pilsner that he must eat occasionally.

– I realized a friend of mine was stuck in the crown in Alaska after the Iditarod dog race, but I thought it would work for the summer. He won the race and got a private plane for himself and the dogs at home, but it will probably be a little worse for us.

He lived with the indigenous

Kvernmo is known for having made various television shows from the Norwegian wilderness and in 2018 he was named Wilderness of the Year.

Last summer, he began his journey in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut in Canada, known as the largest desert in the world with an area almost ten times the size of Norway.

NEW CULTURES: – I have been a lot with the Sami at home in Norway, and on this expedition I wanted to get to know the Inuit and the culture and traditions of the Dené people.

The objective of the trip was to hunt, fish and meet indigenous peoples such as the Inuit and the culture and traditions of the Dené people.

– This summer I rowed from Store Slavesjø to Hudson Bay to the Inuit. A canoe trip of around 1100 kilometers with the dogs, the leaky canoe, and otherwise what we had of equipment. Most of the time we live off what we got from food along the way, so it was a long and difficult journey, but it won’t be a wilder experience.

Fear that something will happen to the dogs

When summer was in full swing, the man from Trøndelag began to think about the trip back to Norway. It turned out to be troublesome.

THE DREAM: For the past 14 months, Jens Kvernmo has lived what he describes as the life of dreams in the wilderness of Canada.

No airline will have the two five-year-olds on board due to the corona pandemic.

– After a few days we learned that a certain type of plane for a specific company could carry up to two dogs. But the route that runs in October is a proper milking route that must pass through several large airports, he says, adding:

WINTER COUNTRY: Without a map, the Norwegian embarked on a journey of more than 100 kilometers with a team of dogs to meet a famous hunter at Fort Resolution.

– Technically speaking, it could have been possible, but the probability of something happening to the dogs when you have to go on such a milking route is very great and I am not willing to run. If they don’t get home safely, I won’t travel either.

In addition to Bamse and Tarzan, Kvernmo travels with the canoe and rifle.

Copes with uncertainty excellently

Now everything is on hiatus and Kvernmo takes one day at a time.

Strictly speaking, being trapped in Canada couldn’t have happened to a better person than the outdoor person from Trøndelag.

– The life I live now is something that I have dreamed of since I was 15 years old. So if I stay here one more year, it’s not something I look at darkly.

WELLNESS: The trio have gone on many trips together, but the expedition to Canada has been something very special, admits the Trøndelag resident.

Because the 34-year-old has enough to do to make the days go by. An extra job as a fisherman means you can earn money for supplies and a wet beer in between.

– I fish or hunt every day and dogs also experience the adventure of a lifetime. Why should we really go home on the civilized carousel? It is not an economic illusion to be here, but at the same time it does not cost me almost anything.
