Thale Rushfeldt Deila, 20, is a great talent for handball. The Fredrikstad player has played for most of the age-specific national teams, and was named best left back last season.
Now she is eager to play handball again after a long break, and Deila places tough demands on herself.

– It was difficult not to train handball during the crown break, but I have still trained hard. I have ambitions of my own and that of the team. I want to go even further in attack, improve defense and be more stable. The team also looks better this season than it did last season, Deila tells Nettavisen.
Turned the situation upside down
Deila is a well-known surname in sports for many, and Thale is one of the two twin sisters who are also daughters of the profile of coach Ronny Deila. The former Strømsgodset, Celtic and Vålerenga manager was hired this winter as the new coach of New York City FC.

This was just before the big city was hit hard by the corona pandemic. New York became the epicenter of the United States and had thousands of hospitalizations and deaths. The city was also put under “blockade” for many weeks. It affected the plans of Deila, who lived at her home in Fredrikstad.

– Ruined my chances of coming to America. I was supposed to visit Dad after the season, but it didn’t work out. I haven’t seen him since Christmas, so it’s been over half a year. Is rare. But we keep in good contact on Facetime and talk every day, says Deila.

He goes on to say that his father’s everyday life in New York also puts things in perspective.
– For a month or two they had to be away from everything. They couldn’t train or do anything special. It was quite isolated. Over time, people were allowed to go out for walks in parks and things like that from a distance, but dad has handled it pretty well. Now they are back training and fighting in Florida, where everyone is gathered, so it’s okay, says Deila.

The online newspaper has placed Fredrikstad in sixth place this year, and Deila thinks that is sound advice. Last season, the club finished in eighth position.
– It seems very positive before the start of the season. We have trained well and brought in two new experienced players. Behind Vipers, I think it is open, and we will do our best to get as high as possible, says the Fredrikstad player.
The 20-year-old hopes to play handball again, but he also hopes for something else.
– It will be great to meet Nora Mørk. She is a role model for me, so it will be fun, says Deila.
