– Over the next 24 hours, a decision will be made on a national escalation plan, says staff physician Sten Rubertsson at the Dagens Medisin National Board of Health and Wellness.
– The limit of what the Swedish health service can do now has soon been reached, he says.
According to Rubertsson, Swedish health authorities are considering seeking help in Finland or other Nordic countries, which are not as affected by the corona pandemic as Sweden.
Maybe i need help
– At the national level, we still have some intensive capacity left, but it stretches far beyond normal and is very unevenly distributed. Before long, we may have to get in touch with other Scandinavian countries. There is a network for this, he says.
So far 320,098 have been diagnosed with corona infection in Sweden, and the number of corona-related deaths has risen to 7,514. This corresponds to 74 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, while the world average is 20.
By comparison, Norway has seven deaths per crown per 100,000 inhabitants, Finland has eight, and Denmark has 16.
No consultation yet
Secretary of State Maria Jahrmann Bjerke (H) at the Ministry of Health and Care Services tells NTB that the Norwegian authorities have not received any request for assistance from Sweden and that any assistance must be made following questions from the authorities Swedish.
– If the Swedish authorities turn to Norway for help, we will quickly consider it. We have a health contingency agreement with our neighboring Nordic countries that, among other things, allows assistance in transportation and healthcare, including hospital treatment. We must assess our own capacity if we receive an inquiry about a specific need, he says.
The Secretary of State further notes that many countries have had and still have significantly higher and higher infection pressures in hospitals than Norway.
– Norway has therefore assisted other European countries on several occasions, including sending health teams to Italy this spring. The teams are made up of 20-25 nurses, doctors and logistics personnel. These come from hospitals scattered across the country, so the burden for each individual hospital is small.
