The third day in the Supreme Court case against the President of the United States, Donald Trump, is over. Before the prosecution presented their latest proof that he was on fire from the attack on Congress on January 6, they tried to convince the Senate that his role that day was part of a pattern.
Several times before, he has promoted lies and war rhetoric, they noted.
– We humbly, humbly, ask you to try Donald Trump, said Democrat Joe Neguse when the prosecution ended their proceedings.
– Because if you don’t, if we pretend that this didn’t happen, or worse, if we leave it unanswered, what will prevent it from happening again?
Trump was right
On Wednesday, the prosecution released a series of shocking new video recordings of the assault. In one of the videos, police officer Eugene Goodman can be seen trying to drive violent Trump supporters away from the Senate hall, where former US Vice President Mike Pence was at the time.
The supporters must have been only 30 meters from him at one point, according to the prosecution.
At the same time, a crowd must have yelled “Heng Mike Pence.”
– Show common sense
The prosecution on Thursday released several videos and Twitter messages dating to 2015, showing how Trump expressed support for supporters who fired a black protester and a Republican who used violence against a journalist.
A protest inside the State Congress building in Michigan in April last year was highlighted as central to the evidence.
– This Trump-inspired mob looks familiar to you: combat flags, MAGA hats, guns, camouflage gear, just like the rogue participants who invaded this space, Chief Prosecutor Jamie Raskin said.
He asked the senators to ignore his political ties and show “common sense.”
– Senators, USA, must show common sense and act accordingly. Don’t get hung up on flashy theories now, he said.
He believes that the evidence presented by the prosecution is strong enough to convict the resigned president.
– If you don’t find it degrading after today, then you’ve set a terrible standard for presidential behavior in our country.
– Requires a “game changer”
Trump’s attorney, David Schoen, said after the third day of the trial that Trump was dissatisfied with the prosecution’s attempt to link him to the attack on Congress.
“He’s quite upset about trying to get involved,” he told Fox News.
There is also little indication that Trump will be convicted in the Supreme Court case. So a two-thirds majority in the Senate must lean toward a verdict, which assumes that at least 17 of the Republican senators join the Democrats. And that is unlikely to happen.
Elected people fled for their lives and police called for help
To change their mind, witnesses who may be called will probably have to present something that “changes the rules of the game” in the coming days, according to ABC News commentator Dan Abrams.
– Unless a witness can confirm that Trump contributed or not to the attack, I do not think he will be convicted. And I consider it unlikely that such a testimony will emerge, he says.
The turn of the defense
Now that the prosecution has finished presenting their evidence, it is the turn of Trump’s defense to make their objections.
On Friday they will present their arguments that Trump should be acquitted. Among both Republicans and Democrats, there are several who believe that the entire Supreme Court case can be concluded the next day.
A more or less united body of experts from around the world has also declared that Trump will go free, unless something dramatic happens during the Supreme Court case.
