(Arsenal 0-1 Leicester) Injury problems and an hour on the bench did not stop Jamie Vardy (33) from scoring against Arsenal, the club he obviously loves to play against.
The Leicester forward’s decisive goal was his 11th goal against Arsenal in 12 games.
Only Wayne Rooney (12) has more goals against the London club. However, it was Leicester’s first away win against Arsenal since 1973.
The goal was Jamie Vardy’s 109th goal in the Premier League. There are as many as, among others, Ryan Giggs.
Jamie Vardy was not involved when Leicester lost 1-0 to Aston Villa last time, and also started Sunday’s showdown on the bench after struggling with a leg injury.
– It wasn’t good enough. This was a great result and something to build on, Vardy told Sky Sports after the game.
When the clock approached the time, however, he replaced Dennis Praet: twenty minutes later, the ball was in goal.
Cengiz Ünder served the tip in an open box, and Vardy easily stabbed him in goal.
In overtime, Vardy could have put in his second for the night, but Bernd Leno stood tall and saved the ball with his head.
Thus, Arsenal, who have so far only lost away to Liverpool and Manchester City, suffered their first home defeat of the season.
Before Vardy’s decisive goal, both Alexandre Lacazette and Héctor Bellerín could and should have put the Gunners in the lead.
Arsenal also had a goal disallowed for offside. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says he has received no explanation as to why the goal was canceled.
After Leicester’s adventurous golden season, Jamie Vardy might have become an Arsenal player in 2016, but he declined.
– I feel like the club is still on the rise. It’s like a carousel at an amusement park, the kind where you sit in a seat and just say, “Whooosh,” Vardy said later that year.
