Steffen Stegavik, Camilla Herrem | Begin your coaching career by training your wife:

Steffen Stegavik must separate work and private, now that he is Camilla Herrem’s boss in the field.

Stegavik resigned as a handball player after last season. He then thanked himself at Nærbø and immediately signed a two-year contract with Solason’s new head coach.

At the same time, his wife Camilla Herrem was thinking of extending her contract with Sola or seeking new challenges. In the end, Stegavik’s employment was ironic.

– I’m looking forward to playing for Sola in the coming seasons, the club is building an exciting team for next season and I look forward to seeing how far we can go together. Also, I hope to have Steffen as a coach, Herrem said in a press release, according to Solabladet.

The collaboration between Herrem and Stegavik at work so far has gone very well, says Sola’s coach.

– It has been very good so far. It has been a unique situation with a lot of training and little fighting, but Camilla’s daily training has been very good. It’s the points that count, and she’s a winger with great ambitions who has won the Olympics and the European Championships. Camilla will do everything she can to improve the team, Stegavik tells Nettavisen.

– Can be discussions

The 36-year-old thus begins his coaching career by training Sola. Last year, the team finished in a disappointing 10th place, admitting that sports recessions can affect some of the dynamics between the two.

– There may be discussions, as Camilla is our highest profile and captain. Then we can take him home, but I think this will work out. She knows what this is about and has respect for what I’m doing. We have the same goal for Sola, says Stegavik.

In a previous interview with Nettavisen, Herrem said that she has full faith in the collaboration between her and her husband, but was not sure what her teammates would think of this combination, when Stegavik was announced as Sola’s new coach.

– I have told the girls that I am a player and that I am on their team. It is not the case that the things that are said in the closet are said more. I have been very clear that this is me as a handball player, while I am also married to Steffen.

– They haven’t said anything about it, they’ve thought of something as a result of Steffen and me. They’ve just been pretty positive about the training he’s had. Right now it has been very good. That’s okay, the 33-year-old said.

Jojo-lag

Despite the breaking of the crown, Stegavik says he has almost been thinking about handball 24/7 since March.

– There have been few handball matches since March, but I have watched a lot of handball and organized sessions and had conversations with the players. It takes a lot more time to be a coach than a player, but it is a task that I enjoy a lot, as it is something that I have chosen myself, says Sola’s coach.

Last season, Sola finished in 10th place. Stegavik is fully aware that his team should perform better in this year’s season.

– I’ll just be disappointed if we don’t finish in the top eight. The sun must stop being a yo-yo team. We must establish ourselves as a stable team. He wasn’t the tallest and strongest player, but by working well tactically and having “intelligence” you can go far. It is the same understanding that I am trying to achieve with the girls. If I succeed, I also believe that we can go far as a team, says the Sola coach.

Sola plays against Rælingen in the Rema 1000 league, on Wednesday, September 2 at 6:00 p.m. You can watch that match here.
