The Spanish government is ordering residents to stay home between 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM. The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, wants the state of emergency to apply six months in advance.
Currently, the state of emergency lasts throughout the country and for 15 days.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, however, told a press conference on Sunday that the government will ask parliament to extend the state of emergency for six months, until May 9.

On Sunday, there was an emergency meeting in the government. During a press conference after the meeting, Sánchez said that they have declared a state of emergency now, but that they have presented a proposal to extend it until May 9.
Can close regions
Among the measures launched on Sunday, the number of people who can meet is limited to six, with the exception of household members.

A curfew is introduced in all regions of the country between 11 pm and 6 am, but regions can choose to advance or delay the time by one hour.
Sánchez justifies the curfew with the fact that almost a third of the infection occurs during social gatherings in different homes, and believes that it is not enough to close the open-air restaurant early because many continue the festivities in private homes.
It also opens up to the introduction of travel restrictions between regions in Spain, where the regions themselves may decide that unnecessary travel in and out of their region may be banned for infection control reasons, writes the Spanish newspaper El País.

According to El País, the objective of the state of emergency and the measures is to reduce the infection to an acceptable level, which has been set at 25 infected per 100,000 inhabitants.

– We have a long way to go, we are going to demand a lot of ourselves, said the president at the press conference.
He also stressed that the six-month state of emergency will not be lifted prematurely, even if infection rates improve.
According to the newspaper, seven months have passed since the last time Spain declared a state of emergency throughout the country.
