Taus Sundby after fadese:

BEITOSTØLEN (Dagbladet): Martin Johnsrud Sundby (36) reported a few days ago to TV 2 that he was in good shape. He was also offensive and informed the channel that it was ‘an obvious goal’ to get to the World Cup opening in Ruka this weekend.

To join the team there, you have to do very well in Beitostølen. And it is not certain that it will last, because the coach of the national team Eirik Myhr Nossum suggests that the places are reserved for the players of the national team.

There are two vacancies on the team heading to Finland next weekend, but it is questionable whether Sundby is still in the discussion, after he became No. 40 in the 15km classic on Saturday. He finished 2.19.90 behind winner Mikael Gunnulfsen.

Speech commentator Birger Løfaldli believes there is still hope for Sundby.

– I think at least tomorrow he should be on the podium. If tomorrow he is on the podium and there is little distance to the winner, then he should preferably win, then I think he can join. I think Tønseth is safe, unless tomorrow he does something very special, Løfaldli tells Dagbladet and continues:

– Sundby has an advantage, he does not have the advantage that the national team runners have, but he has an advantage because he has history. Then you need to confirm the shape.

It was clear that Sundby had problems on the road, not least when Johannes Høsflot Klæbo overtook him on the surface after one round. The latter started the minute behind Sundby, and believes that the rival made it difficult for him.

– Yeah, it didn’t seem like he was at his best today. I don’t know what the cause is, it could be skiing, it could be the body, there are many things that can come into play. At least I had usable skis and my body feels good, Klæbo tells Dagbladet.

After the race, Sundby did not want to speak to the press. He also didn’t do it before the start. Emil Iversen, for his part, outperformed the press on skis, after a disappointing 51st place. Occasionally, there was inclement weather with wind and snow, which made conditions demanding for athletes with high start numbers.

– He looked like he had a miserable day, but I haven’t talked to him so I don’t know if it was skiing, form or body, says Løfaldli.
