Solskjær and United eliminated from the Champions League: – Junior mistake! – VG

(RB Leipzig-Manchester United 3-2) Ole Gunnar Solskjær experienced one of his biggest setbacks as a Manchester United manager when he lost 3-2 to RB Leipzig on Tuesday night.

This means that Solskjær’s team has been eliminated from the Champions League and must settle for Europa League matches in the new year. It is independent of the outcome of the postponed match between Paris Saint-Germain and Istanbul Basaksehir.

The Norwegian is self-critical in the subsequent press conference:

– We don’t play well enough as a team. It is always the manager’s responsibility to prepare everyone. We knew they would attack and hit the box. Unfortunately, we conceded two goals and never started.

– We started too late. This is different from the Premier League. You can’t give your opponent three goals and expect him to come back, the Manchester United manager tells BT Sport.

– An extreme disappointment for Manchester United in a decisive match, says Brede Hangeland in the TV 2 studio. – There are good players who make youth mistakes at the Champions League level.

– Why does United have to put one, two, three goals behind before showing their true qualities? asks former United player Phil Neville on BBC Radio.

Manchester United started the Champions League in the most impressive way by beating Paris Saint-Germain and then crushed RB Leipzig 5-0. Everything seemed fine, but then the recession started with the loss to Istanbul Basaksehir.

In the last ten years, 55 teams have had a full pot after two games. Only four of them have failed to advance: Ajax (2019/20), Inter (2018/19), BATE Borisov (2012/13) and Spartak Moscow (2010/11).

– Of course it was a difficult group, but it is the defeat in Istanbul that makes us lose the points we should have had, says Ole Gunnar Solskjær to BT Sport.

– They had the starting point of the times. When you win away from PSG in the opener and are still 5-0 against Leipzig, then progress should be assured, says TV 2 commentator Øyvind Alsaker.

In VSport1, Rune Bratseth believes that work is safe for Solskjær.

– But it goes up and down all the time, says the Trøndelag resident.

Angelino, on loan from Manchester City to RB Leipzig, scored against Manchester United on Tuesday. Wan-Bissaka didn’t see what was happening behind him, and Angelino thundered the ball with a straight wrist into the corner at 1-0. Marcel Sabitzer was the replacement.

Then it was 2-0 after just 12 minutes of play. This time Angelino played the role of waiter, and it was Amadou Haidara who scored. He reached the back post and widened the ball into the net. Luke Shaw clapped his hands. Who was responsible for the scorer?

On both goals, RB Leipzig took advantage of the width. Manchester United players stayed too narrow.

– Two brilliant goals, coach Julian Nagelsmann later declared.

The 3-0 came at 68 minutes. It was a strange situation where the ball rolled across the field. Goalkeeper David de Gea hesitated and substitute Justin Kluivert stepped in and scored with ease.

But then Manchester United began the recovery. First Bruno Fernandes cut a questionable penalty, then headed in substitute Paul Pogba through Leipzig’s Ibrahima Konte and into goal (a very strong performance from Pogba). In the closing seconds, an RB Leipzig defender almost nailed Pogba’s post into his own goal, but miraculously the ball ended up in the clutches of Peter Gulasci.

Nagelsmann was skeptical of United’s two goals:

– I don’t think it’s a penalty, and the second goal I think Maguire hits it on the hand. So the rules say it’s yours.

Manchester United won 5-0 in the corresponding match at home.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær now has ten Champions League games as a coach. Up to six of them ended in losses, four in victory. According to Whoscored.com, this is the worst stat for any English club manager at this tournament.

In May 2021, when this Champions League season ends, it marks ten years since Manchester United last played the final of the most prestigious club tournament.
