At the core of every Norwegian football progress is humility. So there are reasons to worry about the future.

Pappa Haaland, whose name is Alf Inge and who was in his prime, said in a television interview before the Serbia game that he felt the national team had regained some of this ability.

The smoke signals from the last national team meeting indicate that humility is not as strong as Papa Haaland thought.

As early as the 1960s, that attitude was the root of our few advances. We refer to ourselves as ‘fjordinger’, which is a breed of Norwegian horse from western Norway. It is also related to the Icelandic horse, which comes from a nation that has for some time surpassed in soccer.

Why should they listen to a 72-year-old Swede, who has qualified for seven finals and has led the national team well above the FIFA rankings, when they prefer to go to an advisor and get confirmation that they themselves know more?

In this case, it was a national team coach who supposedly didn’t have a good enough plan for how his team would win against Serbia.

There is no doubt that it was a poor performance by the Norwegian, due to too great distances in the defensive game, little aggression and much poorer skills than the opponent. In fact, it seemed that the Norwegian players had completely forgotten what we thought they had learned about zone defense.

Was it the coach’s fault then?

I think Lars Lagerbäck has gone bad. He has been a coach of disciplined and hardworking Swedes and Icelanders. Meeting Olje-Ola’s children may have been a disappointment, perhaps even compared to what she met in Nigeria?
