AFTER THE ATTACK: On Monday night, the police were massively present in the capital after several people died and many were seriously injured in the attack.
A 20-year-old alleged Austrian perpetrator was shot and killed by police after the terrorist attack in Vienna on Monday. He was a sympathizer of ISIS, according to Interior Minister Karl Nehammer.
A total of 14 people were arrested after the terrorist attack in Vienna on Monday, Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.
Furthermore, Swiss police claim that two people were arrested in Switzerland on Tuesday afternoon, suspected of having connections to the attack.
Interior Minister Karl Nerhammer also claims that the number of wounded has risen to a total of 22. This is an increase from the 15 previously confirmed wounded.
The death toll is still four: two women and two men. One of them must be a German citizen, according to German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.
The perpetrator killed was a 20-year-old Austrian citizen with roots in northern Macedonia, Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said Tuesday morning.
According to Der Standard, the man had previously been sentenced to 22 months in prison for trying to go to Syria to join the Islamic State.
In December of last year, however, he was released on parole.
Fewer life-threatening injuries
– Three of the injured have life-threatening injuries, says Mayor Michael Ludwig in Vienna at the press conference.
That’s a drop from seven the Tuesday before. He also claims that there are 23 people injured after the attack, one more than reported by the Minister of the Interior.
A total of 24 people were taken to the Vienna hospital after the attack, according to the mayor.
– Of these, one has died, ten have been discharged and 13 are still in treatment, says Ludwig.
The government announced a three-day period of national mourning and a minute’s silence was observed for the victims on Tuesday afternoon, Reuters writes.
BACKGROUND: The terrorist attack in Vienna: the death toll rose to four
Many things are still unclear about the attack and the person or persons who carried it out.
Several questions remain unanswered:
- How many perpetrators were there?
- How planned was the attack?
- What was your motive?
- Who are they?
Harald Sörös, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry, tells the APA news agency that they assume there are a maximum of four perpetrators. Massive police forces are still working in the Austrian capital to find more people involved in the attack. The police do not rule out that there have been more perpetrators than the person killed.
“The police currently have no evidence to suggest that there was more than one attacker,” Interior Minister Nehammer said Tuesday afternoon.
However, the interior minister said that it could not yet be concluded that there was not more than one perpetrator.
There are several different locations for killings and shootings, all in the same area in the center of Vienna. These have been confirmed, according to Der Standard, which refers to the Ministry of the Interior:
He was killed in nine minutes
According to Nehammer, it took police nine minutes to neutralize the perpetrator after the attack began, Reuters writes.
The attack began around 8:00 p.m. Monday, local and Norwegian time.
Special forces were called to the area and stopped the attack by shooting and killing the man at 8:09 p.m., Nehammer says.
– The aggressor became radicalized
During the night, the police searched the house of the perpetrator who was shot and killed by the police on Monday night.
According to the minister, the police broke into his house with explosives. Only after this did the information about the motive come, both from Nehammer and the police:
The Vienna police also believe that this is an Islamist-motivated attack.
During the attack, the man had a rifle and “various weapons” according to police. He was also equipped with a bomb belt, which later turned out to be a fake.
During the night, several house searches and investigations have been carried out around the author.
Two more people with ties to the attack have been arrested, Nehammer confirmed to Der Standard on Tuesday, but it is currently unclear what role they have played.
At 2pm on Tuesday, Reuters reports that another person has been arrested in Linz. No further information has been received about this person.
