– He would be a good father

Shortly before returning home, the senator felt compelled to make a statement.

– This has been an outrageous week for us “Texans”. The best state in the best country in the world has lost power, the statement begins.

Cruz points out that he and his own family have been affected by the blackout.

– Since the school is closed for a week, our girls asked if we could go on a trip with friends. Because I wanted to be a good father, I flew with them last night and flew back this morning, writes Cruz.

Additionally, he writes that he and his staff continually communicate with local and state leaders.

– We want electricity, water and heating at home. My team and I will continue to use all resources to keep Texans informed and safe, he said in the statement.

Following the statement, Cruz has been criticized for blaming the children:

– It’s “blame your daughter at work” day, writes CNBC reporter Carl Quintanilla, a pun on the tradition of “bring your daughter / son to work” day.

Admit it changed the ride home

But that didn’t stop there for Cruz. Later on Thursday, he met with the press in front of his home in Texas, where a group of protesters had lined up to ask him to resign as a senator.

By then, the New York Times had published messages claiming to have been sent by his wife Heidi to friends and neighbors in Houston prior to the trip to Mexico, which could indicate that Cruz shouldn’t simply follow his daughters and then return home.

“Will anyone or will anyone travel this week? We are thinking of going to Cancun,” the wife wrote, among other things, and stated that the family would travel on Wednesday and would likely stay at the elegant Ritz-Carlson hotel until they return to home on Sunday.

Cruz chose to confirm to the press that In fact, he had plans to stay in Mexico for the weekend., and that he changed his return ticket after the case ended in the media.

– Did you come back because you felt guilty or because you were exposed? asks a journalist.

– Obviously it was a mistake and, in hindsight, I wouldn’t have made it. I tried to be a father, Cruz responds, adding that he began to doubt his decision when he sat in the seat of the plane on the way to Cancun.

– Traveling when so many people were in pain did not feel good, and I changed my ticket to return today.
