Shaken by Saudi Revelation – Seeks Joe Biden for Help

Leaders of the Labor Party and the Socialist People’s Party agree on his reaction after Dagbladet revealed that Saudi Arabia in 2018 tried to get Norway to approve a team of security guards as diplomats. The PST has informed a Saudi critic living in Norway about the case.

– Dagbladet reveal is sensational, but unfortunately not surprising. The murder of Jamal Khashoggi in October 2018 clearly showed the extent to which those in power in Saudi Arabia are willing to face critical voices, Anniken Huitfeldt (Labor Party) tells Dagbladet.

The head of the Foreign Affairs Committee hopes the incoming US president can lead a different and harsher line against Saudi Arabia than Donald Trump has done.

– I am glad that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the PST have been involved in this case. The United States, led by Joe Biden, could influence Saudi Arabia to change course, Huitfeldt said.

She adds:

Saudi Arabia was symbolically the first country Donald Trump visited as president. Under Trump, the United States has sadly given Saudi Arabia too much leeway and has failed to criticize human rights violations. When putting pressure on the fundamental values of human rights, it is extremely important that Western countries do not operate with double standards, that conditions that are harshly criticized in one country are accepted in another.

– Scary

Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Søreide (H) declined to comment on this matter. However, it will be done by SV leader Audun Lysbakken, who in no uncertain terms supports the criticism.

– The hunt for the Saudi regime for its critics knows no bounds. The information in the case is terrifying, because it shows a pattern in which diplomatic immunity can be used to hunt down and monitor critics of the regime, Lysbakken tells Dagbladet.

– We cannot be naive and it is therefore good that the Norwegian authorities follow what is happening at the embassy.

He makes a vague critique of the West’s handling of what he believes to be an authoritarian Saudi regime that is taking more and more steps.

– Even scarier is that Western countries allow the Saudi authorities to get away with most things. We saw that in the Khashoggi case, we see it on the ground in the Yemen war, and we see it now when activist Loujain al-Hathloul is brought before a terror court. When there are no reactions from the outside world, it is not surprising that the regime continues to violate human rights on a large scale. He believes that the support Saudi Arabia receives from the United States is “setting double standards”.

Red leader Bjørnar Moxnes praises the government:

“In this case, the government has done the only right thing and has supported one of the closest allies of the United States,” Moxnes told Dagbladet.

It is important to remember that Norway has been exporting arms to the Saudi regime for several years, and exports to the countries involved in the cruel war in Yemen are still continuing. Rødt now expects at least an equally strict line towards all other countries that commit abuses against their own populations and persecute dissidents.

– Don’t be naive

On the other side of the political landscape, Christian Tybring-Gjedde (Frp), second vice chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee at the Storting, believes that Dagbladet’s revelation shows why Norway should not be on the UN Security Council.

– It is important that the Norwegian authorities are vigilant. Some countries are known to use their embassies for surveillance and espionage. Among other things, the Iranian embassy has been exposed in carrying out such activities. We must not be naive, says Tybring-Gjedde to Dagbladet.

– Totalitarian regimes do not take into account intergovernmental regulations and no less are regimes based on Islamic law looking for dissidents. Norway’s membership in the UN Security Council could contribute to increasing unwanted behavior on Norwegian soil. This is because Norway will be forced to take a stance on demanding political issues that can affect individual countries in different ways. This is precisely the reason why FrP believes that Norway should not be part of the UN Security Council.

The embassy is aware of what has been published in some media about the case of Iyad el-Baghdadi and the accusations against Saudi Arabia. The embassy wishes to point out that this person is not a Saudi citizen and is unknown to Saudi Arabia. What he said is fabricated and false and is intended to offend Saudi Arabia. We have been in contact with the Norwegian government of Saudi Arabia to receive more information on this matter. Saudi Arabia reserves the right to take necessary legal action against the foregoing to protect the rights of Saudi Arabia. “
