But Cruz is not alone. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said earlier this week that he has not been in the White House since Aug. 6 because he does not believe the Trump administration is exercising good infection control.
“My impression is that their approach to this was different from mine, and what I insisted we do in the Senate, which was wearing masks and practicing social distancing,” McConnell said according to Politico.

– Extremely irresponsible
Arizona Sen. Martha McSally was also asked this week if she supports the president. In a debate against her opponent in this year’s election, Mark Kelly, McSally was asked if she is a proud Trump supporter.
– Well, I am proud to fight for the people of Arizona to reduce taxes, for example, she replied.
But it’s especially Trump’s handling of the corona pandemic that has caused many of his own to turn their backs on him.
Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker believes that Donald Trump has been extremely irresponsible in his words and actions by ignoring advice from experts in infection control and epidemiology.
Texas Senator John Cornyn believes that Trump has not exercised self-discipline in the fight against the coronavirus and that his attempt to prematurely signal that the pandemic is on its way back is creating confusion for citizens.
– Will not join the mast
American TV 2 commentator Eirik Bergesen believes that what we see is a Republican party that fears the consequences of joining Trump’s coronation, and believes that Mitc McConnel has now given rhetorical backing to other Republicans to distance himself from Trump.
– If members of Congress stand for election and join the mast in supporting Trump’s handling of the crown, they will sink with the ship. What McConnel is doing is giving them a poorly disguised signal that they can distance themselves from certain parts of Trump’s rhetoric, Bergesen says.
Republicans have been extremely loyal to the party since Trump was elected. Bergesen points to both the Müller investigation and the Supreme Court judgment as examples of Republicans supporting Trump almost without reservation.
Now, however, he believes there will be many more examples of Republicans breaking Trump’s rhetoric, because it is a joke that more members of Congress are running for office. Lindsey Graham, who has been a sure card in the Senate, is struggling with the polls, and even in Texas, Republicans are now in trouble.
“McConnell now fears that the Democrats will take over the Senate, the House of Representatives and the presidency, and then Joe Biden will have enormous power to change American policy,” says Bergesen.

– Too late to distance
American commentator and author Thor Steinhovden says allegations continue to surface that Republicans are turning their back on Trump, and that he is not impressed at all times.
– When you mention examples of some candidates in trouble, I do not think it is a symbol that the party takes a violent distance, says Steinhovden to TV 2.
It emphasizes that the party has been criticized by Trump since he won the election four years ago.
– This is probably not very important to Trump. It is too late to distance yourself. The fact that some senators do so has very little to do with Trump’s popularity, the American commentator believes.
Depending on the error
But Steinhovden says Trump is in a vulnerable position.
– The measures that have come after the debate have pointed in one direction, and that is negative for him. But there is still a long way to go before the election in Trump’s world, says Steinhovden.
However, he believes the acting president is dependent on a mistake by Biden.
What can radically change this is a Biden scandal, or an episode during the debate that confirms the worst fears around Biden, says Steinhovden.
