Senegal legend Papa Bouba Diop dies – VG

Former Senegalese player Papa Bouba Diop, who spent much of his career in English football, passed away on Sunday after battling illness for a long time. He turned 42 years old.

This is confirmed by Fulham, one of his former clubs Twitter.

– We are scandalized by the news that Papa Bouba Diop has died at 42 years of age. Rest in peace, “Wardrobe”, writes the club.

“Wardrobe” was Diop’s nickname when he played at Craven Cottage.

The International Football Association (FIFA) also confirms that Diop has passed away.

The old midfielder spent most of his career in English football. There he played for clubs in Fulham, Portsmouth, West Ham and Birmingham before retiring in 2013. He also played for French Lens, Greek AEK Athens and Swiss clubs Grasshoppers and Neuchâtel Xamax.

Diop was also successful in England; In 2008 he won the FA Cup with Portsmouth.

World Cup Hero

He also played 63 matches for the Senegalese team, and was Senegal’s top scorer at the 2002 World Cup. At that time, he won the match against then-world champion France in the first match of the group stage.

He scored two more goals in the 3-3 match against Uruguay in the same championship.

Senegal reached the quarterfinals of that tournament, where they lost to Turkey in extra time.

He was also with Senegal for the African Championship four times. In 2002 Senegal reached the final, where they lost 2-3 to Cameroon after a penalty shoot-out.

Diop is number ten on Senegal’s nobility schedule and number nine on the list of most goals for the national team. He scored eleven goals for Senegal.
