Hugo Larsen, who was captain of the “Scandinavian Star” in 1990, has passed away. He turned 86 years old.

Larsen will be buried in Sandefjord on September 29, according to the obituary in Sandefjords Blad on Wednesday.

159 people lost their lives in the fire aboard the “Scandinavian Star” on the night of April 7, 1990.

– This is very sad news. You have done your job and it was incorrectly designated. He didn’t fail at his job, says Sigurd Klomsæt of Larsen’s death. Klomsæt was Larsen’s assistant attorney.

The ship was heading from Oslo to Frederikshavn when the fire broke out. The ship’s owner, Henrik Johansen, shipping director Ole B. Hansen and the ship’s Norwegian captain, Hugo Larsen, were sentenced in November 1993 to six months in unconditional prison.

In the court’s view, they had to take responsibility for the main safety deficiencies on board.

The verdict was upheld by the Danish Supreme Court on November 22, 1993. In 2004, Larsen tried to overturn the verdict, but was unsuccessful.
